I started out as a sci-fi gamer, with fantasy on the side. Somewhere along the way, I went more towards fantasy (with a paper model side trip into Star Trek.) D&D and Frostgrave really encouraged that shift.
Today, on my hobby table, I have the following:
1) Dark Ages Irish
2) English Civil War Irish
3) 17th century Japanese.
4) WW2 Japanese
In a "current projects" box somewhere,I have two more warbands for Frostgrave and some sci-fi stuff for FiveCore.
I have no idea how I became a historical gamerโฆ

Is that such a bad thing?
I find with models, I bounce between genres a lot

There is nothing wrong with being both a round-baser and a square-baser. You'll get arguments on both sides of that aisle, no matter where you stand. Personally, I have mostly sci-fi stuff (with a dash of fantasy and a little pulp) as the historical doesn't hold that much interest for me, but I still can turn out a WW2 vehicle if I find one that I like. So, enjoy what you do, and what takes your fancy, because isn't that the MOST important part of this hobby?
