After seeing all of the amazing 15mm scale warbands, I thought I'd dabble a bit in this scale. Here are the blue line and B&W sketches for the beginnings of a 2.5D Heavy Mecha. I'm designing it for a 40mm hex base (flat basing) and it should stand about 55mm tall. I still have the torso section and weapon arms to go before I can begin tracing. Let me know what you think. I think I should make the stick figure cowering in fear...

Looks nice so far; I like the general shape and the armour detailing. How are you going to make the body - box-fold pieces that attach to the flat side, or just flat parts that slot in?

I'm planning to make it just flat parts that slot together. My goal is to have one piece for the head/cockpit (or should I say "pilot compartment" to avoid "thingy"?) and one piece for the torso and legs. Then I'll have separate weapons for the arm hard points and torso mounted slots. At least that's the plan...

I like the big inner cyclinder heads, they look like they rotate and spin during the colussus's movement.
Neat design!

Very, very nice... you've perfectly captured the essence of a huge lumbering hulk of mass destruction..

Yep, looking forward to this one. If it's that huge vs a 15mm person, then it's still useful as a robot (etc) at 28mm. ;D

I really want it to be a military mecha and not a robot. I can't believe I just typed that! I'm such a nerd that I have a different mental picture of a mecha versus a robot. Too many cartoons, comic books, and video games... I think I'll keep the leg design, but the head will need to be changed. More like pilot compartment, less like a robot head. More sketches soon.

Interesting point. In a lot of anime, for instance, there's not necessarily much difference between a mech and a robot. A Gundam, for example, has a humanoid pose and a distinct head - but I'm pretty sure the head doesn't really need to be there, as I think the pilot usually sits in the chest. Technically, the only real difference between a mecha and a robot is whether it requires a pilot or not.
If you want to make more of a physical distinction, you could try making it look more like a vehicle with legs.

Here are my next sketches for the 15mm mecha I still have to work out some details, the torso section, and weapons, but I think this is going to be a good start. What do you think?

Very nice. I like these versions more than the first one. A little Vaughn Bodé-ish. (Yes, that is a good thing. He made great super deformed machines, me thinks.)

I'm only able to work on these during my lunch break and after work, but here's the first bit of progress: Keep in mind that no colors, gradient, line weights, or any details are finalized. I'm just blocking things in as I trace the image.

Definitely. The gradients, as simple as they are, are working well too.

Wow! 15mm is a crazy scale to work in! I was sort of used to the amount of detail that could show up in 25-30mm scale, and I had pretty much figured out that I'd have to go back and delete things, but this scale is a whole new challenge. Not to mention the 2.5D difficulties! Here are the legs with torso and "arms" with front and back views for the medium scale mecha. I'm going to finish up the "head"/pilot compartment and a few test builds before I begin the final coloring details. The 2.5D light mecha is going to be another challenge...

You are doing an outstanding job... I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the test build...
onemonkeybeau - Actually I've got the rules mostly done already... WaffleM is being kind enough to work on the figures and Aestelon is working on the game's record sheet... Our goal is to put together a complete and polished package we can actually publish.

"Finished" the pilot compartment/head. Now I'm getting ready for test builds. If all goes well I'll begin working on weapons and the light and heavy mecha.

Very tasty. It certainly looks like it'll build fine. Just as a reminder though, in case you hadn't got it down already, it looks like you cut the line between the elbow and the nee so it folds at the hips, right? You may want a little written note to that effect on the final sheet, just to make it clear.
