The theme for this month's HOARD is Halloween Wars This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of September, 2017. Halloween Wars! All things Halloween. Pretty self-explanatory, and always a favorite hoard. Have fun!

Context? Edit:Oh...duh...this is the 2017 one, not a new post to the 2016 thread. I'm a moron.

First submission, something scary enough to soil even the most stalwart adventurer's breeches. I am working on another submission too, so keep an eye out for that.

I love the flip-book flavour of the door mimic transforming.

I have a questionable wonderful little project for this month that should bring a smile. I think I may be able to squeeze some computer time this weekend to work on it

I couldn't wait and got a start on my Haunted House, well, Outhouse. At least its a two-holer What evil spirit lurks within and stalks unwary victims at night (or when the wind is out of the wrong direction) Seriously, if you see a spooky green cloud at night, go the other way ... fast I was thinking I would go with a scalloped slate tile roof, just a shade darker than the door color, but I'm not sure... EDIT-- printing off now...

I think the monster that lurks under the outhouse is every bit as primal as the one under the bed.

You've got that right. I've got to re-size this. The cloud is too small. I shrank the cloud to fit the roof pieces on that page. It needs to be the big size again. The outhouse should be able to shrink a little and still accommodate the doors. The size on the building was set so that the Gothic doors are in line with Dave's doors. His door height is about a fifth of the way up from the taper, so that seems good. 28 mm figures that have their hands reaching out, pretty well line up with the door handle. I think that after I re-size the building and cloud, there will still be some room for a roof detail of some sort.

Well, the movie Stripes was on, so I thought I'd build AirDave's Stripes RV, but you have to study it too much while watching a movie. It's not one of the easier ones. So I messed around with the Goldfinger Aston Martin, enlarged by 15% and added the 3d tires, but it got late. I did get the Haunted House re-sized. Just enough that it fits on one page, then pasted the old doors into it. Still need to enlarge the cloud. And I'm thinking of doing it like oldschooldm's fuller trees, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/8545/simple-technique-fuller-slotted-trees. But not until I get back in town Yes, I know it is a touch cramped as far as the page layout, but I really didn't want to shrink it down too much

Well, Doodie! That Aka-Manto(sp?) thing resembles the character I imagined as a mod behind one of the doors. I haven't given up on it, but getting close. I pictured mine as being cloud green, though

Well, I mentioned it, so I might as well embarrass myself. This is the little fellow lurking behind one of the doors. Not good enough for a figure, but probably okay obscured by the door. Yes, now you all can see why I deride my ability to do figures. Maybe if I could justify the time to get good again, I would, but I think I need to concentrate on what I am better at And the cloud gets better proportions I hope this theme has a certain unified feel, in spite of this odd-ball entry.

Vermin King, your ghostie is good enough for a stand alone figure! Please do a back and put him (her?) up!

Vermin King, your ghostie is good enough for a stand alone figure! Please do a back and put him (her?) up! I suppose I could do that. When you look at the Haunted 'House', and the cloud, there isn't much extra room on the page. I don't want to just do a page with the mod for the open door with the spook inside. And there is a gargoyle I wanted to put on top and two other roof-peak gargoyles I wanted to add. I really wanted to do those, because they can be added to any building as a nice detail touch. So, if I do the mod, the gargoyles and a figure, I could justify doing an additional page. I don't really think he is that good, but at least I'm dipping my feet into doing figures. They will get better with practice, I guess hope

Vermin King there will be things from other creators that will add extra pages. I am sure your ghostie can find a home somewhere in the final package. As an aside, after a good 10 months of inactivity on my part, I am working on something. Not Halloween-themed, but I hope to be done by the end of this month.

Vermin King, the thing to remember about figures is that they don't get viewed the way they look on your screen--eight inches tall against a white background, at a viewing distance of 24 inches. They get seen at 1.25" tall, on a busy game table, at a viewing distance of three to eight feet. Stuff that looks super wonky in GIMP disappears on the table, and the figure blends into the entire tabletop tableau. So don't let minor imperfections get you down (the way I do). Don't allow "perfect" to become the enemy of "good," or of "finished."

Argh! I have now devised three ways to do the open door to see the green phantasm--
1. A piece with a valley fold. One side is the inside of the door that glues onto the backside of the door that needs to be cut except on one side. The other side has the guy on a field of black that glues to the inside of the wall.
2. Cut the existing door, have the guy glued behind, and a separate inner door.
3. Cut out the door entirely with a fold-over door connected to the guy panel
4. Cut out the existing door, with the door and guy panel separate. (Yeah, I thought of a fourth)
I'm back to thinking my #1 idea is easiest without losing any detail. Thoughts?

Option 2 wins! By the way, would anyone care to do the back on this guy? I know the texture is screwy, I pasted the cloud texture into the various areas, then sampled colors to add highlights. Also, the lightbulb came on and I realized the format on the cloud parts was wrong, so fixed it I decided on the gargoyle roof ornaments to just stay with the ones from Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. I've got five of them pretty much done I also was wondering if folks have a recommendation on Autumn ground tiles. Just asking

Kind of beat tonight, but I did do the cloud with two upper portions like oldschooldm's fuller trees. I think I want to add a third

Okay, other than a stench, what would mark a medieval 'facility'? I'm thinking 'WC' signs were a product of the 20th Century. Something like this?

A crescent moon could convey the message, though it may be anachronistic.

After doing some research, it appears that public privies were civic projects (other than when Rome was there) starting in the 14th century. Although private 'whizyngholes' were basically outhouses on upper floors extended over the streets, the common man usually didn't have these facilities or see the need. However municipalities would mark areas with crosses to designate 'no relieving yourself' zones. But public facilities did exist, usually on a bridge, wall, or along a gutter. These were generally near markets. I suppose to discourage soiling the merchandise. Especially important if you were selling fish or other edibles.
Nobility would typically use cotton or linen for cleaning the bum. A plant called mullein was a preferred plant used by the common man. This weed was found all over Europe and encouraged. It was a popular plant for this purpose because it was very soft on the flesh. AND ... part of the duties of a privy warder sometimes included maintaining 'plantings of mullein'.
I think I may have a small 'sign' on the mod page, but I've found a photo of some mullein plants. I'll make a small patch of these to go on either side of the building. That is probably a more correct marker than actual signage.
Probably more info than anyone really cared to have shared ...
