I was having a look over Afet's wish list thread, and got a bit inspired and decided to see what I could come up with. This is the first one nearly finished, and is my response to his 'evil mage' request. As such, I'm colouring him with largely dark, muted colours, but I imagine with a lighter pallette and a couple of tweaks he could quite easily serve as a magic-user of some other kind (although he'd still look pretty grim regardless). I've got a couple of others on the way, including a half-dragon warrior (which could again quite easily double, probably as a demon of some sort) and a blacksmith (with anvil, of course). He's almost ready; he pretty much just needs some shade and highlight, and maybe a little texturing.

Very nice! And now you see how nice capes are, makes the rear views so much easier.
For shading, what I have started doing is creating a new layer. Set it to MULTIPLY, then use an airbrush and add your shading, don't worry about being perfect, and use as large of a brush size as you can ,this will give softer shadows. Also ,set the brush to 50% OPACITY so it takes several strokes to turn it black. Once your done painting, use a hard edged erasure and clean up all the edges. do this before adding the thick outline, this way you don't have to be perfect. The set the whole layer to 70% opacity. You can also mess around with the different transparency modes to see what looks cool, but this will darken the color underneath.
I hope that made sense, don't ask me any specific questions about the exact tools or anything because the actual software is not important, all photo editors and painter use these tools.
Most of all, experiment and see what looks cool. JIM

That's pretty much exactly what I do, actually. Main difference being I tend to set the opacity a bit lower than 50% (usually more like 30%) to get a smoother gradient.

Looking good so far. Kindda contradictory though for him to be flashing the 'Live Long and Prosper' sign while carrying a spell like that. Maybe it is a warning.

Ah, no, see "live long and prosper" is when the hand is held up. This is "die soon, and in great agony".

Hey Aestelon!
Just took another look at your mage here...
I wonder if some 'overspill' light on his hand might make the fireball pop more?
It looks kind of flat as is.

Flat, you say... could that be the complete lack of shade and highlight..? Is this closer to what you had in mind?

I am digging the muted earthy colors. And the pose is interesting. Looking forward to seeing this mounted and on the table.

Hey Aestelon!
I built your awesome Mage last night but at least on my printer the colors looked really washed out... maybe darken him up a bit to solve this?

Really? I thought he looked okay when I test printed him, although he could possibly do with a little more colour to his skin. Is yours looking washed out in general, or would you suggest particular areas that need beefing up?

I shrunk him down to 15mm so maybe that had something to do with it... I mainly noticed washout on his cloak.
But a little darkening all around might help.

Brilliant. I'd love to know how it turns out for you. Meanwhile, Beau, give this one a crack. I've pulled down the brightness a fair bit, and upped the contrast. I didn't really want to bring the cloak right down to black, though.
