Because of feedback in another thread I want to take a minute to share with you my struggle and reasoning to find my current setup on Patreon. Maybe you can give me your feedback what you think about all of this and if the current setup is a problem to you then maybe we can find a better solution.
But to start at the beginning, I will explain how I came to my current setup. BTW for those who don't know it, Patreon is a crowd-funding site where supporters of artists can pledge money on a monthly or per project basis. So this is something I had to decide whether to go per month or per project.
But regardless of going per month or going per project, because any set of mine can be so different in size and complexity Patreon cannot handle this. If I go per creation I would have to make each creation the same size or change the amount for every project. Also I cannot charge differently for one project level but only for all Patreon, so Patreon does not support the reward tiers like this.
If I go per month, again it is quite hard to find the right value per reward layer as, depending on the size of the project, I might be "too cheap" or "too expensive". My solution is to constantly churn out stuff, even parts of what else would be larger sets, to give the Patron something for his or her money every month.
What I am going for now in Patreon is a very low pledge amount structure ($2-$4 per month, at some points I had levels at $10+). That is $12-48$ per year and I was hoping that this amount is something anyone can afford. If at any time a Patron finds that I am not producing worth my value, they can turn of pledging whenever they want. Actually (per Patron instructions) I have to check who's pledge is actually coming through end of the month (because Patrons can have limits setup and I might not be in the cut that month) and only make stuff available to those who pay. But I have found a solution to that.
My dream for now is to grow a community of fans of me that have come to trust my output (quality and quantity) and are willing to support me like a Patron of old on a per monthly basis without having to worry that they are losing money. The benefit for me is having one site where I can focus my daily updates (it took a lot of time distributing infos on so many sites!) and focus my time on creating stuff. In this setup I leave it up to the Patrons to decide whether to back me up the current month or not. Also I always announce what the reward for next month will be so you never have a situation where you don't know what's coming.
The only thing I think I will change is that I will delete the $1 level and turn on the updates info to public. This level was intended for friends helping me test in the beginning and I wanted to see if there was anyone out there who is willing to pay $1 per month just for WIP info. Turns out no one
So that about sums up my challenges and thinking process on how I ended up with this setup.
Please let me know what you think about it and where you see problems that might keep you from pledging. I am happy to change if we can find a solution that fits all needs.
