I've only recently discovered the G'MIC plugin (http://gmic.eu/) for GIMP - haven't tried it yet. Shortly after that, I saw a twitter post showing off a video for their 2d shading:
Seems like it'd be a neat way to experiment with shading of some paper minis?

Interesting. Shading is always the point at which I get frustrated and abandon a project. I have several things stuck in process that something like this could help unstick. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
