I decided to go with 15mm scale. I'm hoping to be able to make a couple of decent armies quickly with this method. I also decided to forgo the line drawing completely. I found the lines just got in the way at that small size. I'm planning on doing the backs, and then colorizing them in photoshop right on top of the values. Happy with the look so far. Let me know what you think.

Looking good. In a game, I assume that the five guys would act as a unit and die as a unit. Correct?

Vermin King thanks! Depends what game you're playing. I intend to use the Kings of War rules. In KoW, these 5 guys would represent 1 rank of troops. A unit can be made up of 2 - 8 or even 10 ranks of troops! A unit is treated as a single "game piece" and will fight and die as one.

Interesting observation about the lines at this scale. I definitely want to see the finished product.

cowboyleland I'm looking forward to printing them out and seeing how they look in person. Will post pics ASAP. I just have to keep myself from noodling them to death!

Here's the first round of test prints! Just b/w for now. I like the amount of detail/readability. I love the scale and physical feel of them (mounted on illustration board adds some weights compared to the foamcore I've been using). I'm not so sure about the black background/outline. I will do some tests with white, and maybe add some of the base color in "behind" them up to about knee height. I may also shift the perspective to be looking down at them more instead of head on. I am toying with the idea of trying to do these in traditional media (gouache/watercolor paint). I'm not sure that it would add anything aesthetically, but it would be nice to get away from the computer screen... I feel like it would be much more challenging. I don't know if I have the patience; I just want to print them out and put them on a base already!

Being a bit more top down makes sense. I always say "most of us don't play with our chins on the table."

When I was playing with "Chronicles of Blood", I made up the example armies given in the rules with figures mostly from the monthly hordes. Here's the armies: Golden Alliance Army 3x Men-at-Arms regiments (15 points) -> 2010/51 Men at Arm 1x Knights of the Realm regiment (8 points) -> Miscellaneous fantasy (gatchaman,) 2x Elven Rangers regiments (12 points) -> Okum Arts' Elves 1x Dwarven Stoneguard regiment (8 points) -> 2010/88 1x Soldiers of the Sun regiment (7 points) -> 2009/18 Unholy Blight Army 2x Orc Warriors regiments (10 points) -> Orc warband mod 4x Goblin Warriors regiments (8 points) -> Goblins 1x Battle Demons regiment (8 points) -> Hoard34 1x Dark Knights regiment (10 points) -> Hoard84/85 2x Skeleton Horsemen regiments (14 points) -> One Monk (I removed the elves and skeletons from these uploads, as they came from Okum Arts & One Monk, so are commercial) I removed any dark border, because I felt at that scale, it obscures the figures. I also upped the contrast and brightness some-what, because on my printer at least, the detail was pretty hard to see.
