i would design light tank tracks for it, but my skills for designing papercrafts are super basic right now, so im just replacing the wheels with tracks like i did with the sandmaster V. besides, i like having four sets of tracks anyway. this is the png ive been working on. i used what i could to help determine basic total height and width of the vehicle itself, to help design the tracks, which are fitted to it in the png. i know they are incredibly simple, but i have no experience with making 3d models using proper 3d design software, let alone converting the models. ive used microsoft paint and gimp to make what you see here in the png. the tracks are a tad thin, and i may adjust them later, but for now, this is what ive got. im actually hoping someone can assist me with this, both aesthetically and in making actual papercrafts out of them. i was only able to make the tracks for the sandmaster because i used the ones from a pre-existing model. i thought id give it a go with designing tracks from the ground up with this one. the tracks themselves are actually from the ebbles mbt, like on my sandmaster, but the rest was made by copying and pasting bits and pieces of the m722 LRV together. im actually thinking about using a tad more space on the outside(and maybe even going so far as adding control panels and stuff to the inside where applicable) for some track-mounted light turrets!! constructive criticism, feedback, and any experienced advice/assistance would be GREATLY appreciated! thank you

I like the concept and geometry, but I have limited time and the Onager Longhauler inspires me more right now. Other than creating a 3d track part, are you needing anything else? I'm assuming that the track unit is the same for all four locations, right?

correct. all four will be identical for now. i may add more as the project develops. i expect to be satisfied by this coming friday.
i have ideas to add to it right now, but i may pause and resume when i get back from work tomorrow.

A little off and on topic but still in the spirit of tracks on vehicles, this reminded me of an idea I had a little while back about possibly trying to use Ebbles Itoyo 950 tracks on a vehicle, like say Ebbles 4x4 to make a tracked variant. I wander if something like that with a little scaling and kitbashing would work or be an easy starting point?

ive thought about using the itoyo's tracks on many occasions but i dont believe they would scale well. i may try this with something else though.

@ vermin king i am unable to make these tracks a thing, and i would greatly appreciate your assistance in the matter.
however, i have decided that i want to add some extra details to the models before they are finished. my few ideas will not change the basic shape, and can be added to the model's exterior later. i will require your assistance with making them as well. thanks in advance!

Until I get caught up on the D&D campaign stuff, this is going to have to wait. I have six wagons needed and I only have two, and they probably need to be replaced with my newer versions. And then I need to do a bunch of warehouse stuff. Be a bit patient. I might be able to get to it early next week

A fine challenge you have left on my doorstep. I thought you were wanting this as a single unit piece, but your drawing makes it look like a housing that goes over a track unit piece. I guess I need to know more about what you want. I fixed a lot of the symmetry and image issues, but I need to know more about what you want

Got the housing done to match the image in the first post. Adjusted the MBT tracks to only have four road wheels and rescaled to match the image in the first post. In the image above, the tracks are wider than the rescaled track width, so I still have to adjust that, but I am making progress

Crud! Almost forgot to post the final page. It has two of the track units, and my two images from the first inquiry post on which I based the units Having never made the MBT, I had to refer to Christopher Roe's instructions for the tracks. Build the track unit, then overlay the tracks (which should be much longer than needed), build the housing, and glue the completed tracks to the back wall of the housing. The housing is built back-to-front. I'd use a marker to blacken the non-printed side around the openings to avoid that ugly whiteness. I left the original concept drawings to be used as a template for placing the tracks, to keep them even

hahaha! this is exactly what i was going for! though, i did want the opposite side to be the same texture as the front, but whatever.
also, im thinking about adding small turrets with retractable barrels to each of them. something like on certain warhammer tanks. i think i can make them myself, but it would be nice to have you 'proofread' the turret when im finished!
sorry ive been gone for a while. i started work at a new job a couple months ago and ive had barely 4 hours to myself every day, which definitely makes this a very welcome surprise!
the only thing stopping me from going full blast into this project rn is the fact that ive been unable to get my hands on some overhead projector sheets to replace the fake windows on the medpods i want to put in the apc. has anyone here worked heavily with overhead projector sheets or inkjet transparencies with smaller things? advice would be appreciated!

I used to use overhead transparencies, etc. , but I do equally well scrap plastic, like from packaging (think Christmas card boxes), for smaller things, I've even gotten the cellophane from cigarette packs from some friends that partake of such evil enjoyable habits

for reasons unknown, they will not print at the right size. all my attempts have given me 80%-60% of the original scale. i dont have time to figure this out right now and id be grateful if you could assist.

Well, I thought the problem might have been that your original image may have been reduced, so I checked your M722 size against the original and that is correct. And everything is 2550 X 3300, so that isn't the problem. Your profile view of what you wanted is the same size as the back panel, so everything looks correct. Did you convert the png to pdf before printing? If you do that, remember to keep it at 300 dpi.
But the file is correct, so I don't know why it isn't working

i cant print the png directly because my settings do not show the correct paper type im using, and only prints pngs on glossy paper. i tried using gimp and it seems to have added a border or something when printing. microsoft draw does the same thing, but paint completely re-orients it sideways AND adds a border...
considering im gonna be getting deep into papercrafting, i should try to figure out how to make the direct-to-printer printing to use the paper types i need. no matter the file type, if it is any type of picture or image file, windows treats it like a photo and does not allow me to select any non-photo type papers..
ive no idea what to do right now, but i will do some online research when i have the time, unless you can give me an immediate solution.
again, the size on the png is correctly scaled and all, like you said, but the problem is with the programs im trying to use to print it. ive printed stuff like this before at the correct scale and all using gimp, so i dont know why its adding a border...
i am still however looking for clear printable stuff. do you have a suggestion for what i should use for this particular project? again, i need something to replace the ud41's medpod's fake windows.

If you open the file in Gimp, you can Export to pdf. Open the pdf and print from there. Shouldn't add borders that way.
What printer are you using?

epson workforce 3720. it can print on the 110lb cardstock just fine so i believe it should print the transparencies/projector sheets fine too.
some related printer questions;
is there a specific printer designed for papercrafting and such? are there printers that print for papercrafting better than others? by better i mean in terms of quality/speed. when set to high quality my printer takes about 15-20 seconds for a single sheet, but the quality is definitely worth the wait. the ink for this printer is also fairly cheap as well, so im moderately satisfied with the results, but im just wondering if there is a better option i should look into for the long term.
i know there are the craftrobo cutters and i plan on having one some day, but they are too expensive and ive not got the time to really get into that sort of thing right now. are they worth it?

also, i realized that i saved the thumbnail, not the original. i will still export to pdf, but i think i figured out the error. i will test this when i get home from work.

In my opinion, absolutely. They cut more accurately and faster than I can. There are tons of cutfiles already out there, many in this forum. I bought a used SD four or so years ago for a hundred and some dollars. It changed the scope of what I could manage with the time I had. I probably never would have built a FDG winter hawk castle with out a cutter. Without one my collection of paper things would be greatly diminished.

i am also seriously thinking about some simple machine gun/flamethrower turrets on the pods. something along the lines of the warhammer 40k space marine predator tank side turrets. i figure that, because it has tracks instead of wheels, that it should use that extra horsepower for extra firepower. now that i think about it, id also maybe even like to add a bulldozer plow to the front.
also in serious thought is that i want to make it so the track pods can be raised or lowered individually without having to glue them. i figure i can add such functionality in the wall of the hull.
after having built one track pod, i definitely want to add more detail to them or that general area. the turrets are one option, but i would also like some sort of hydraulic system in there too. the pods are quite small and underwhelming. i did want to just redesign the entire hull so that i could use a better track system, but that would be above my level...
however, if the paper gods here at cardboard warriors can assist me in designing these things, i would much rather use something else than what ive got currently. a single body but with two sets of tracks on each side.

I'd just use magnets to adjust the up and down bit.
If you want to go from four tracks to two on this vehicle, the side doors would be an issue

i wasnt planning on moving to a two track design. i want to keep four, but in the style of two. this for example; vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/armoredcore/images/b/be/NEXT_Kurumagakari.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170107081259 if it were using tracks. however, it would be easier if i went from four to two. i could still use the two side doors. it would be like this design; i.ebayimg.com/images/i/143116706804-0-1/s-l1000.jpgthis tank is actually using a side turret design like i wanted, too. i will have to get my hands on some small neodymium magnets then! the only problem with my idea is that i still want to put those three medical pods in the rear, but now that i think about it, i could remove the more complicated stowable turret and add a rear door. this would allow the medical pods to be loaded/unloaded from the back. i could also put the pods between the rear seats... so this is a list of the stuff i could/want to do; 1. replace the wheels with some sort of track system, preferably four sets. 2. add 2 or 3 ud41 medical pods to the interior, with each pod having; A. transparent sheet windows B. functional pod door C. stuffed, cloth padded interior D. printed interior wall and door details made with textures other than the exterior of the pod E. injured persons in two of the pods, with stained cloth padding if the injury requires it (preferably plastic for ease of creation, but paper will do if the model is simple enough) 3. height adjustable tracks using magnets and slides 4. remove main gun to make rear door(unless the turret can be made stowable some other way. it wont fit inside the ud41 unless the turret is removed or stowed) 5. if turret stays, the gun will be replaced with something bigger, maybe a RAILGUN or redesigned to use a missile/rocket pod 6. add two simple machine gun or flamethrower turrets to the rear sides, replace four front passenger seats with a console on each side with a single seat 7. redesign the sides to make the wheel hubs bigger/more forward to fit better tracks 8. leave the tracks open to view. if this is used, making the side weapons might be tricky 9. glossy photo paper for medical pods to give them a cleaner feel big list of tedious stuff, i know, but the gears are spinnin and im pretty excited about what im thinking. i will draw a sketch in paint and post when i am done! thoughts?

this is my current progress on the sketch. after building one of the original track designs, i have decided that, if i can find help, i would definitely prefer the bigger track designs like in the sketch. i am almost certain i wont be able to modify the front to fit the longer tracks myself, but what i want done simply requires the front sides be aligned with the hub sides. the main reason the front tracks are so long is so that they stick out in front of the vehicle to allow it to cross uneven terrain better. though, i would actually prefer that the entire hub me moved further toward the front, rather than having absurdly long tracks. if i do this, i may or may not have some extra space inside, which i dont know what i will do with. the rear tracks will be roughly the same design. the upside-down trapezoids hanging from the hub are turret mounts. having the front modified to be flat with the hub sides will allow for bigger guns to be stowed, and allow them to fire directly forward too. i have not decided on a weapon design yet, but i am certain whatever it is will use parts of the maginot's guns. i am almost certain i will be forgoing the stowable turret to make room for a rear ramp door. ive also decided that i will fit 6 medical pods along the middle of the vehicle's interior between the seats. i have not yet decided on a side gun control hub, but each side will have one, near the front, replacing the four troop seats in the front. i assume i will use a simpler version of the control system in the front passenger's area. i finally got my hands on some inkjet transparencies, but ive only got ten sheets. i havent tried them out yet, but it does seem like the kind of material id like to use for the medical pod windows. however, i dont know exactly how im going to get the pod to open up.... i still need some injured peoples and paddding. to wrap it up, i really like the new track designs. they fit better for something like a light troop carrier, which would be fast. the old track designs would fit a tractor or some kind of slower vehicle. i will still definitely use them though.

Can you make the C3 Sentry tracks work? I was just thinking from your initial picture they look pretty close. As far as all the other details you are drescribing, some of Jim Bowens or Patarochs designs have interiors that you might try incorporating. I am really interested to see how this comes together. Thanks for sharing, Dave

Post by woosh on Nov 3, 2019 16:28:53 GMT -9
so ive gone and finished all but the gun, turret, and tracks.
the medical pods project is nigh finished! the result is less amazing than i expected and took some real doing. theyve literally doubled the work time and work effort for this thing. however, the final design was worth it. i used inkjet transparencies for the pod windows and used some pocket cloth for the padding. both pods are double layered and made with ultra glossy photo paper, which ive learned cracks on folding. this gives the pods a damaged and worn look i wasnt really going for, but it isnt super bad so im okay with it. the pod doors open and close as intended but, ofc, do not close perfectly. they do open fully however.
the shortened pod rack is alright but the two pod rack arms are quite bad. the top pod falls off the arms and onto the bottom pod quite often. this is expected, but i might just redesign the pod rack arm to make it more sturdy.
with the little room i had to work with inside the apc, i was somehow able to fit a pod rack monitor on the rear wall. my initial plan was to give the monitor its own hinged arms but the design is way too small for something like that. i tried anyway and failed horribly. i realised that glueing it to the wall was a bad decision if i ever want to put a different layout in the apc. i could in the future remove it and add a section to the removable floor for the wall and cieling. i may even redesign the arms. the montitor itself is triple layered; the back and front frame are the regular cardstock, but the screen is copy paper with inkjet transparency glued to it. the idea was awesome but failed because the super glue did not dry clear. the monitor now appears to have moisture behind the screen, which i dont like. this same problem appeared with the first medical pod windows and the apc driver window. i removed the driver window for now, the pod will keep the windows its using, and i may redo the monitor because the second pod rack windows dried clear and look amazing. the front frame and back of the monitor are one cutout, and is part of the pod rack monitor keyboard, which is hinged. i wanted to put the arms on the back of the monitor to connect it to the wall for extra detail, but again they are too small.
with the little room left in the rear, i put a double seat next to the monitor, across from the pod rack. i kept the two double seats in the middle as designed, and kept the two single seats in the front.
my current progress; i do not like the tiny gun on the turret, and am working to put a bigger gun on it. the hurdle i have to deal with is space, so i opted to use a bigger mbt gun and a modified 20mm rotary autocannon barrel from the maginot firebase set. my initial plan was to have a small support beam inside the mbt barrel to fit inside the housing(rotary autocannon)'s bigger support beam. ofc, these things are smaller than expected and my initial design failed. the main parts still telescope perfectly but they dont look the best and are still a bit too small for my liking. i know i should design an ammunition rack and/or power bank for this bigger gun to fit inside the apc, but it is already cramped.
the roof of the apc is finished and i love it.
famousdave420, i do not believe i could use the sentry's tracks, but youve given me the idea of using the sentry's autocannon as a housing for a bigger gun! the reason i could us it is because i want to have the bigger gun housing rear overlap the gun elevator.
i am open to ideas! i will post pictures when i get the chance!

THIS PROJECT IS 95% COMPLETE(but it it'll stay that way for a while)
The track units went together rather well and ive managed to improve on the movement system without much hassle. Instead of using the included axles pegs, I've cut 12 Whit, short, fat nails, pushed one through the unseen side of each unit, super glueing the nail head to the yoke, which has two nails superglued to their underside and pushed through the steering block top and bottom. This allows the previously simple and solid suspension system to be independent across all four units. The units can rotate on the x, y, AND z axis! The only problem with this is that the units tend not to sit flat without a little posing. This is a very small problem however and the flat unseen side still has hidden elevation potential I may make use of later. It still fits inside the ud41 with the same roof and ground clearance as the original.
The medical pod project is a partial success. The pods themselves proved to be a hassle to double layer with fragile photo paper, but the second pod proved worthwhile. The pod doors fully open and close, but do not seal. The transparency film worked wonderfully but was a hassle only because the super glue on the first pod's windows dried white and messy, but I redid them and they are both gr8 now, perfectly transparent. An old pocket provided me with the material for the cloth bedding, and looks great. I can't find proper injured personnel yet, but I will someday. It appears they will indeed hold a 1/60 or 1/72 scale plastic miniature.
The pod rack was easy, but the arms are not what I was hoping for, and the final version will have better rack arms.
The medical computer looked great on the file but the monitor-to-wall arms were far too complicated to work at that scale. The monitor itself wouldve been a success if the super glue I used to glue the transparency film over the monitor details hadnt dried white and looked frosted over. I removed the monitor and computer completely for later redesign. I will someday design proper schematics for that.
The upgraded gun was also a partial success in that it looks very worn. It still retracts just fine like I intended however. I hastily redesigned the smoke launcher to be deployable with a single piece. This was a hassle and my extensive time wasted with it gave it a worn look too, but it works as intended.
Last but not least, I tried using transparency film for the driver window but the glue did not dry clear, and so I removed it. I will try again at a later date.
I also added an included viewport which was not used in the original design onto the turret to make it possible for the turret to hold a seated mini. I may redesign the turret to actually do this someday.
TLDR; I am very proud of my redesign of the ebbles m722 LRV. It includes/will include the following changes;
Heavy track units in place of wheels,
Steering/suspension system capable of rotating on all three axis,
Two highly detailed medical pods, shortened pod rack, and (wip)medical computer and monitor with monitor-to-wall arms,
Six soldier seats instead of 10 to make room for the medical additions,
Turret autocannon replaced with extendable anti-armor Gauss cannon,
Single-piece deployable smoke launcher,
Transparent driver window.
I LOVE THIS THING and am willing to post the final files here when I get the chance!
will post pics tomorrow!
