Inspired by okumarts thread, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/9608/armageddon-outta-line-auto-ideas , I started working on this truck using the style of kiladecus's Camel FAAV. Rather than clutter up Dave's thread, I'm going to show my progress here. The truck looks like a Fifth Generation Ford pickup. As a tow truck, it would probably be the F-250 Heavy Duty Short Bed. Wheelbase would be 131 inches, which if I made the wheelbase 2.5 inches would be about 1/52 scale, which works. I'd probably do the wheels like squirmydad's ESWAT kitbash of Christopher Roe's vehicles. It definitely adds strength to the build. kiladecus used two pages for the Camel FAAV, and I see this requiring two pages. The central wrap-around will have to be longer to accommodate the open cabin. Then there are the half-wheels, the tow mechanism, bench seat and a steering wheel, so you can see it is right-drive. Might do a simple ballista, also. Wheels are definitely turning As the roll bars are white, they should be pretty easy. The additional driving lights on the front will probably be part of a separate part that glues onto the front that will also include the grill. I think I will add a bumper strip to be glued onto this also to give depth. Here's where I am at now

Added the spotlight and worked out the width of the center section. Still working out how I want to handle the non-existent dash. One can see the frame where the dash used to be, but I have no clue if there is any instrumentation, or what is visible from the driver seat. I have yet to find a photo of what the dash would look like if all the surface was removed, so I guess I will have to wing it

Well, when I did the backdrop for One Small Step, Gimp freaked out on me. Just thought it was tied to the png files. But today, I printed off glennwilliams's Soviet Lander, only when I tried to take the letter sized jpg and export to pdf, it blew up, too. So, I checked out my Snake Tow Truck files and the pdf's blew up, too. I had this issue ages ago, and don't remember how I fixed it. I think I re-installed Gimp, but I don't remember off hand, and don't have time to sort things out. <==== Frustrated as all get out

Using this image, I was able to come up with the middle strip for the dash area, the two sides of the windscreen and the hood. I kept a little of the angled panels, hoping that it will help give the illusion of the hood being higher in the middle. We'll see if it works EDIT -- As I was continuing with this, I started rethinking things I knew already that the central strip would have to be more than one piece. If you look at the insides, there is the hood, the back end, and the interior. I'm thinking of making the center strip in three parts. Also, looking at how high this beast sits, more than half of the wheels sits lower than the body. Half wheels won't really work. So, I think I will do full wheels glued to the inside of each wheel. This requires cut-outs to accommodate the wheels. No biggie, just a change. Back to work ...

Doing the grill, bumper and driving lights piece was frustrating last night. None of my images could get me where I wanted to go, so I looked up images of other 1970 Fords and found a couple fairly straight-on views. I'm in the process of squaring them up a bit and taking elements from the Snake Truck front end and inserting into the new front end. Instead of trying to get all the driving lights lined up, I'm going to take the best one and paste four of them into position

Well, I wish I'd known Road Warrior was on last Saturday. I'd have liked to score some other images. I did find a post-production photo. After shooting, a local bought the snake truck, and after taking a few photos, he parked it out on the back forty to rot. This is after filming, but before dying a slow death This gives me the tread pattern anyway. I also found a felt pattern I think I can use to make the cover for the gap between the cab and bed. Well my certification link didn't show yesterday and I doubt it will come today since it is a holiday, so now I have to decide whether to continue working on this today, or wait until after the 11th when I have Road Warrior scheduled to record. Or I could go back to some of the prep work for the cargo buildings

Hopefully, I'll have time to get back to this tomorrow. Got the movie recorded, and started watching and realized the need for dune buggies. I had actually started on the car that the guys in police uniforms are in, I forget off hand what it is, but the dune buggies should take priority And I'd really like to test myself on whether I could do the Lone Wolf I bet some of those custom cars were a bear to drive
