Hello fellow Cardboard Warriors!! Despite my recent absence on the forums, I have been slowly working on my 15mm paper minis for small scale Kings of War. I really tried to kick the habit, but I've found myself coming back to the little paper soldiers time and again. Not that its a bad way to spend one's time! The thing is I'm at a point where I need to decide where to focus my time and energy in regards to my (many) creative projects. I just may have to keep this one from my wonderfully supportive girlfriend for the time being. I know (because she's told me) that she's tired of hearing me go back and forth about what to draw/paint/make next. You're all guilty by association now! Hahah anyway here are some pictures of a quick mock up I did of some stinking elves. I decided to go back to the ol' black outline + line-work. I tried to keep the design as simple and clear as possible. I plan on refining the drawing a bit for the real deal. Still no news on the DriveThru front. I will get to it someday. Its on the long list of things to do.

I really like the idea of blocked figures. But, would it be too much work to make sure there are subtle differences between figures in a single block? At the moment, I use figures from various character sets - these tend to have figures which are very different from each other, such as a couple of spears, some swords and a few archers. If I want a large block of similar armed figures, such as swordsmen, I have onbly two or three different figures to work with. I then have (OK, I don't have to, but I want to...) play around, editing head positions, angles the swords are held at so on, to give a bit of variety.

alloydog glad to hear you like doing blocks of figures too! Since these will be considerably smaller (15mm as apposed to the more common 28mm) i want to avoid fidly cutting and assembly. The idea is to have each rank be its own mini. However i will be drawing out each pose individually and rearranging them within the ranks to add some variety across the unit. I also want to have subtle differences as you mentioned for variety from man to man. Im quite sure that i want to have a unique cpmmand element for each unit (banner, misician, champion) and perhaps some unique poses from rank to rank (like the lowered spears in the 2nd line).

I really like the block figure concept! Would work well for mobs and crowds in Rolepalying too!

There is one issue I have with blocks of figures is the basing of them. With individual figures, you can use removable bases, so everything packs flat. But with blocks, I haven't found a good way to mount them securely enough to play with, but still removable for safe packing. At the moment, I still glue them to fixed bases, but then they have the same storage issues as plastic figures.

alloydog yeah ive been thinking about this too. My first inclination was to go with fixed bases due to the size and fiddliness mentioned earlier. When i did some 28mm figs i would slot them into foamcore. Id imagine that could work... Another idea i had was to only have 1 contact point for the base, say on the back side of the mini, to allow the ranks to all fold flat in one direction. Will have to do some testing...

That is one of my "currently running in my head" problems. But for now, I'm taking a different approach. I'm mounting the figures on inch square bases. Two cavalry figures per base, four infantry or one big beastie. This so that I can reorganise the troop layout going from wide frontt to columns, for example, when crossing a narrow bridge. Actually, the bases are 24 mm, as the covered bridge, by Dave Graffam, printed up as 25 mm wide, so 1"/25 mm bases were a smidging too big. But, still want to play around with wide troop blocks, so still thinking about it.
