Greetings Cardboard Warriors! I am currently revising some aspects of the membership and group system and in looking at the post rank titles I believe they are a bit too churchy. This forum was originally founded by OneMonk so he gave the member ranks monastic order titles. I'd like your help to change that. The current titles and ranks are as follows; Initiate = 0 posts (someone who just signed up for the free donuts) Novice = 1 post (someone who said thanks for the free donuts) Adept = 10 posts Brother = 25 posts Friar = 50 posts Monk = 100 posts Abbot = 500 posts Bishop = 1,000 posts Archbishop = 5,000 posts Cardinal = 10,000 posts Overlord = 20,000 posts The post count numbers are not up for debate, but I do want to change the titles to something more reflective of the forum's interests. Submit your ideas and I'll build a poll for the membership to choose the new rankings. Please note; you will need to be at least of Novice level to vote in the upcoming poll. If you disagree with this please post about it so we can start a discussion. Why does this matter? Several reasons, primarily because there is a difference between "membership" and "community". Also if you are not of at least Adept (10 posts) level you will not be able to vote in future Papercuts Showcases. Members who are in the Illuminated Scribe or Publisher Groups will be able to vote. How do you become a member of the Illuminated Scribe group? Submit an entry to a monthly Forum Hoard, or to the annual Papercuts Showcase, or upload a papermodel or papermini project anywhere in the forum at any time of the year. I am also going to be testing the Global Message option for the forum with this message so stand by to be spammed.

What about something medieval like:
Wanderer = 0 posts Villager = 1 post Squire = 10 posts Knight = 25 posts Lord = 50 posts Baron = 100 posts Viscount = 500 posts Count = 1,000 posts Duke = 5,000 posts King = 10,000 posts Emperor = 20,000 posts

I personally feel that we need to be thinking 'Cardboard Warrior' in all this. 0-10 posts being Civilians, and up through military ranks with some sort of paper-related adjectives. I don't know how that would flesh out, but I think it has a little merit.
EDIT--I spent too much time trying to come up with examples, so you beat me with that post. I think it is on the right track
EDIT #2-- These comments count on our post count, right?

I can understand why you would want to take the titles in a new direction. As for me, I have no preference on what they are, but I will think up a few that might work with the system.
Have you thought of looking at a MUD/MUSH/MOO etc. to see what various titles they have come up with?

MUD/MUSH/MOO sounds like the worst breakfast cereal ever and no I haven't looked elsewhere. I already have my ideas for the ranks but I will wait to post until others have come up with something so as not to squash inspiration. The point of this is to be an opportunity for an involved membership.

Apprentice Rookie Assistant Beginner Learner Layman [Layperson] Intern Journeyman [Experienced] Associate Advanced Practitioner Expert Craftsman [Artisan] Master Trainer Mentor Veteran Guru [Choose 10] Is that the order you would want them in? When I build the poll I'm going to copy and paste from the submissions.

EDIT #2-- These comments count on our post count, right? Yes. If the 0 posters have nothing to say then they won't get to vote. This is a perfect opportunity for the tourists and drive-by likers to get involved. I'll let this play through next monday the 23rd and then build a poll based on the submissions from this thread.

For real though, its a good idea. Shake things up a bit and knock the dust off. I really like Vermin Kings idea. Something like: Tissue paper Initiate Paper private Cardstock corporal Cover stock Sgt Label Lt Cardboard Captain Matteboard Major Foamcore Colonel Gluestick General Etc..

Is that the order you would want them in? When I build the poll I'm going to copy and paste from the submissions. I edited it and it's still open for suggestions/improvements. Until then, here's my latest cut-n-pasteable list: 00 Apprentice 01 Rookie 02 Layperson 03 Assistant 04 Intern 05 Practitioner 06 Artisan 07 Master 08 Mentor 09 Veteran 10 Guru I like the level of skill over the military ranks...

Except '0' isn't really an 'apprentice'. Curious, maybe. Most folks would probably object to that, though

I don't really know, and don't have time to really think much on this right now.
But, those that come by and either don't register or don't log in are 'guests'
If they register and never post at all, they have still put in a little effort.
One post generally indicates a specific question.
All three of those would be 'civilians', the curious, the lookiloos. Maybe 'visitor'? But there is a little distinction. Albeit small.
To me, 'apprentice' indicates a level of commitment above that

@oldschoodm: I think "Layperson" is less committed to the craft than an apprentice? I would think Guest, layperson, rookie, apprentice, assistant, intern, etc. I really think emergencyoverride is onto something. Guest Card Cadet Paper Private Cardstock Corporal Cover Stock Sgt Label Lt (Laminate Lt?) Cardboard Captain Matteboard Major Foamcore Colonel Gluestick General Cellulosic Civilian Citizen I want to look up the 1st Ed. D&D level titles for fighters now.

I want to look up the 1st Ed. D&D level titles for fighters now. Like I need an excuse to pull out my old AD+D Players Handbook. Here are the Fighter levels; Veteran Warrior Swordsman Hero Swashbuckler Myrmidon Champion Superhero Lord I'm tempted to give the "0" posters the title of Peasant. Paladin levels; Gallant Keeper Protector Defender Warder Guardian Chevalier Justiciar Paladin Ranger levels; Runner Strider Scout Courser Tracker Guide Pathfinder Ranger Ranger Knight Ranger Lord Magic-User; Prestidigitator Evoker Conjurer Theurgist Thaumaturgist Magician Enchanter Warlock Sorcerer Necromancer Wizard Thieves; Rogue (Apprentice) Footpad Cutpurse Robber Burglar Filcher Sharper Magsman Thief Master Thief My daughter just suggested "Paper-Slayer" so I'm putting it here to help remember it.

I really think of this more from leadership and creativity, rather than skill. There are some very skilled artists with few posts. And then there are folks like me that are pretty good builders, fair designers, yet never game (well, not in the last 15 years) I think I'm getting more confused on what I'd like to see as this goes on. cowboyleland, shouldn't there be a brawler/bouncer and a foot soldier before you get to Warrior?

I like the idea of member ranks, however, I don't like the military notion everyone seems to see implied by the forums name "cardboard-warriors". I'd rather put the community into the spirit of a secret society and the master maisons and builders of the middle-age:
Guest (0 posts) [could also be Bystander, etc.] Member (10 posts) Initiate (25 posts) Apprentice (50 posts) Journeyman (100 posts) Builder (500 posts) Creator (1,000 posts) Master-Builder (5,000 posts) Master-Creator (10,000 posts) Architect (20,000 posts)
What do you lot think?

My only concern here the implied link between skill and number of posts. As Vermin King said above "There are some very skilled artists with few posts." Or am I overthinking this....

How about futzing with the Fighter levels a bit:
Cardboard Watcher Cardboard Veteran Cardboard Warrior Cardboard Swordsman Cardboard Hero Cardboard Swashbuckler Cardboard Myrmidon Cardboard Champion Cardboard Superhero Cardboard Lord
Heh heh, I know that's a bit dopey, but the Ftr level titles from the 1E PHB came to mind when I got the PM. I was glad to see it already there. --Ron--
