so ive got a LOT of models. mostly plastic model kits and bionicles, but my papercraft collection is growing. its pretty much at a standstill because ive been building nothing but bandai gundam stuff for the past...3 months...?
but ive been going through and saving stuff on amazon for later when i have the money. however, i realized, after looking at how much stuff ive got saved, and considering the fact that i want to have most of it within the next year or so, my room IS the biggest bedroom in the house BUT ive gone and filled it up already. i would have a decent amount of space if i hadnt just put my 700 lb vintage tv cabinet in here for use as an awesome modelling station(pics later), but i had to disassemble it to get it in here. it is also holding stuff that probably could be put in my closets but this cabinet is beautiful and it has great sentimental value to me and it is STAYING.
there are a few ways i can allocate space;
move stuff out of my closets behind my tv
there are two small ish closets behind my tv in the corners of the room. i dont really use them for anything but storage and then they are still empty or not being used to the best of their ability. i dont really want to put my models in them because they are out of the way and behind my big tv and dresser, but moving stuff out of them might help me put other non-display stuff in them. i havent done this yet because, for one, i dont have a whole lot of stuff that isnt display stuff, and the downstairs storage closets (one of which is almost completely full of my keepsakes..) are almost full and because im lazy. either way, doing this may or may not help a little or a lot. another thing to mention is that, because they are behind the tv, they are looked at quite a lot. ive put my smaller and/or less notable papercraft stuff on a shelf in one. i dont really like the idea of condemning my hard work to closets, even if they are right behind the tv and fully visible.
build a murphy bed frame in the wall
doing this will mostly only allow me to move my couch farther back from the tv, but i still plan on doing this because it will remove the bed(likely the biggest piece of cloth furniture in any house) out of the way when not in use, and allow me to move the couch farther from the tv(which is kind of in my face for its size). maybe i could do this and build a special shelf in the frame so that its the shelf when put away but the bed when not...
buy a new tv with a wall mount
this will allow me to remove the large, unused dresser it is sitting on. i may use it when i get myself a gf, but for now, it just holds my speakers, giant tv, computer and xbox. if i replace it with a display shelf or cabinet below a lighter tv hanging above it, i can put the computer and xbox on it, along with more models, but the speakers need stands if this happens, and because of the layout of my room, i often have to go around them to get to the closet, and having them on a big, sturdy dresser makes it less possible that they get knocked over. i would still do this however. in fact, i think i will do this regardless.
make MORE wall shelves
i currently have 4 heavy duty wall shelves; two above the tv over the closet doorways, one holding all my gundam model kits, the other holding my best bionicle mocs. the other one is actually heavier and older than the other two, made specifically to hold my best papercrafts. heavier only because i had not thought of the method i used for the newer shelves above my closet doorways. i also have a 3rd of the newer type above my bed holding my less awesome but still awesome bionicle mocs. ive cut out one more shelf that was to fit next to the last mentioned shelf above my bed, but i dont really NEED it right now and i dont have much space left for more wall shelves.
these are only the things i can think of right off the top of my head, but today, after i looked at all the models and stuff i have saved for later on my amazon account, i NEED more space if i want to accommodate them all lol. there is ofc, no way id be able to fit everything i want into this room and still keep everything thats in it, in it. i will eventually spread most of these models out throughout the massive 2000 square feet house i live in, but i assume it will be a while before i do this(when my dad gives me the title to this house(a few years probably). my brother and his gf are supposed to be moved out by the middle of next year, and that should give me some extra space, but i dont want to stuff all my models in one room. id like to at least leave one room open as a guest room after he leaves. i do not plan on participating in any tabletop games anytime soon and i have the space to store STOREABLE, non-display pieces(none of my models fall into this category, and the same goes for most of if not all of my future papercraft projects, so i need ways to display stuff. something to mention before i ask the question i want to ask, i never wouldve thought of asking you guys here on cardboard warriors if i hadnt been glancing at the wonderful previews of the few dave graffam, ebbles, mystic mountain, fat dragon and lord zsezse papercraft buildings ive bought. these are things i definitely plan on building and displaying, possibly using in tabletop gaming or in dioramas. these are ofc, for the most part, large, fragile things that cannot be stacked.
my job puts a LOT of money in my pockets, but because im basically feeding my family and paying for stuff they dont really need(and my 2016 prius which is AWESOME BTW), i dont have much at all to spare. it took me 5 months for my dad to let me spend even 300$ of my weekly 750$ on a couch that i planned on having MANY MONTHS ago, when i first moved into this room. my whole room layout was based on the fact that id have a couch(pics later) and coffee table/ottoman instead of my old ass ikea computer desk sitting in front of my tv.
and now, the moment ive all been waiting for, the reason ive made this thread is to ask you all a simple question that may or may not have a complicated answer to;
WHERE AND HOW DO YOU DISPLAY YOUR DISPLAY MODELS? DO YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR ME?
