FH 187 April - Renaissance Warmachines in Venice >> ?!? Err... forget - just don't get the idea - maybe some more descriptions would be helpful? Think the contraptions of Leonardo da Vinci, and the take them two steps further, like wooden mecha run with treadmills, steam, and cogs. Or a Leonardo-style combat helicopter... Models like these could be interesting on any Warhammer Fantasy, Age of Sigmar, or similar styled game table. The Venice part refers to all the possibilities that come with the style of La Serenissima, as for example used and portrayed in the skirmish game Carnevake from TTCombat. These two themes could be combined into simply stunning manner, like perhaps a Venetian palazzo that is able to transform into a DaVincian mecha… You're not into (hard) SciFi, are you? The Batmobile? James Bond's DB5? Simon Templar's white whatever-it-was sportscar? Knight Rider???

FH 184 January - Worlds of Verne Nice! It sparks some ideas, however, I have to see how much time there will be for (perhaps) a balloon, some things from deep down below, or some other adventure stuff. Since my modular tavern is supposed to be part of the 2019 December hoard, and my Cyberpunk club is perfect for March, I have no idea, whatsoever… Obviously, the perfect place to finish my Cyberpunk-style club set "The Jungle"… Yes! I imagine a huge wooden mecha with copper-plated legs, run by a giant treadmill in the center torso, with forward and rear cannon, and a boarding ramp in one arm and a battering ram in the other, striding through the canals of Venice, about to tear down the palazzo of some scheming noble, or the merchant ship of a more successful competitor… Hmm… DUST Tactics in cardboard, this might be interesting. That's none for me, since I still cannot draw… Perhaps a place to put more parts of my Space: 1995 Luna Base prequel to Alpha sets… Same procedure as every year, I presume. Yup, I like it, but I'm out… A bunker, perhaps? Or some ruins?? I'm really not a car designer… Perhaps I can find out till then, how to complete the HQ of the Three Investigators. There ARE two movies about them, ane even without those cinematic exploits, those junior detective are real stars here in Germany, especially in my age group. We will see, which of the above projects will pop-up in this hoard. I like these ideas. 2020 will be a great year, hoards-wise.

How I see these --
FH 184 January - Worlds of Verne Huge topic, from Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, space and even Around the World in Eighty Days. I'm thinking Victorian explorers just about anywhere
FH 185 February - Bar Fight! Fantasy, Historic, Modern, Sci Fi, Apocalyptic, wherever, whenever. Brawlers, spectators, collateral damage
FH 186 March - CyberPunk Forces Dystopian future. Dirty or clean doesn't matter. Gangs, Corporate Agents, Dictatorial control and suppression (oh, wait. Isn't that modern life already?)
FH 187 April - Renaissance Warmachines in Venice Da Vinci (or even Archimedes) devices to further the Republic. Other than Shakespearean characters, there is a huge void for Venetian people, too. Canals, Gothic Architecture, the Almighty Ducat (I think that was their currency), the greatest navy of the age, The Arsenal (the factory-like shipyard that at one time was spinning out a ship a day and could be turned into a factory for other devices)
FH 188 May - Weird World War-Dieselpunk Mechas and alternate weapons is what I always think of. Again, needing more people- soldiers, support staff, and other people in uniform
FH 189 June - Fantasy Pets and Familiars Surely, in your gaming, you had that one player who tried to make a pet of everything. I've only been in three gaming groups and we had one in two of those. Yes, familiars, but other beasts would be really cool. I always thought a cheetah would be a great pet. Or a falcon. Or a Pernese fire lizard.
FH 190 July - Hard Vacuum/Deep Space Deep space. Ships, ship battle maps/floorplans, alien planets, space colonies, space ports, and everything that goes with them
FH *** August - Papercuts 2020 Papercuts has been building over time and I hope and expect it to be bigger this year than any previous year. I always look forward to seeing creativity exhibited.
FH 191 September - Halloween Monsters and Hunters We really didn't specify, but I see this as traditional monsters and those who protect the world from their mayhem (I recorded Hansel and Gretel-Witchhunters over the weekend)
FH 192 October - Wasteland Survivors/Gamma World Mutants I really think these meld together well. Post-apocalyptic people vs people, or people vs mutants, or people vs aliens disguised as people, or people vs zombies. There are so many wonderful roads you can travel down
FH 193 November - Cars of the Stars I see this one going two ways. Movie/TV vehicles or the vehicles used in other galaxies.
FH 194 December - Hoard of the Procrastinators Open Hoard. Whatever is close enough to be wrapped up and just needs to get done.
I still have my doubts on November, but what would we replace it with?

I still have my doubts on November, but what would we replace it with? How about Castles, Court Ladies, and Champions? A hoard filled with everything imaginable from medieval times: castles, crusaders, guard knights, royal courts, farm hamlets, road inns, wandering priests, working and praying monks and nuns, the baron's men, the count's army, jousting tournaments, whatever... But beware! All history, no fantasy! No magic or magic users, no dragons, no unicorns, no wizard's towers, no orcs or goblins... Or include the fantasy for an Arthurian twist.

This idea seemed to bloom, then complete silence. About the Castle would be great, but might be too vague to truly inspire. If we swap this for November, I will probably paraphrase shep's description. Lots of Likes, but little expansion on the idea. It wouldn't be hard to expand this idea to include a market or at least vendors

Maybe call it "Royal Tournament" which would encourage hawkers and buskers, etc.

It wouldn't be hard to expand this idea to include a market or at least vendors I'd personally like to see something like this come together from the hoard entries: A castle on a hill, a small village at the foot of said hill, and a jousting tournament being held next to the village with many tents and everything. Of course, there's a market or fair for the event, and lots of people from all social classes everywhere... Kind of like a history playset depicting the middle ages for kids in elementary school. I'm pretty sure, we can get this organized. And since it would be the November hoard, some of the more complex individual projects could run into December, too, and be finished by the end of the year. Perhaps even as x-mas presents for some kids in our families?

Now we are seeing the wheels moving. The whole idea of the Hoards is to spur creativity and fill voids that haven't been filled in involving our craft. Wyvern's comments that reminded me to get this discussion going made me go back and try to determine what led to the wonderful, big, over-the-top Hoards. So many of those do share a few traits. They hit at the right time ( I seem to have misplaced my crystal ball). They had a lot of idea sharing ( 'I could never xxxxx, but would someone like to try? and 'If I can knock out yyyy, would someone do the zzzz? ). And many of them developed a picture of where they were headed as they moved along. I try to get that started in my Into posts, but only with intermittent success. Some of the best Hoards were specific and others were broad, so that isn't a determining factor.
One thing I did notice is that an idea was presented (there are no bad ideas) and others expounded on it. Sort of what I try to get going in the Next Year's Hoards threads.
Enough rambling. Shall we swap this out to be the November Hoard?

If you try to do a 3d star, it would be hard, but it is only a 5-sided dome on a cylindrical tower, then turned sideways and laid on the frame of the wheels, front end and cab. These big guys are real beasts. How large would you make yours, emergencyoverride? It's a shame that you can only get to Robototehnik's site by invitation now, because I think he actually had a model of this It may have MaksArt that did the train I am thinking of

Actually it turns out that I've a lot (like really TONS!) of this type of more-or-less historical content. So... maybe I should do regular sets based on that? But then, just for consideration - "Medieval Court /Castle /Tournament" may be one of the kinda "permanent" CWF themes - you know, one to which new elements, made by various artists/users are with time added (and over time the whole thematic base is created). Anyway just my two (or rather modest one...) cents. Mesper /PERMES

I've been cleaning house over at the Yahoo Groups since they'll be shutting down soon and I found the original conversation; March 28, 2003 Brabantini Message #741 Hi, I'm a long time lurker. Inspired by the work I've seen here I've decided to try my hand at designing some paper miniatures. Having recently gotten back into gaming, I wanted a way to create armies without painting, which I lothe any painting now. My problem now is just figuring out what to start working on, lots of idea's, no discipline. Which brings me to the subject of this post, I think it would be fun to create a Visions in Paper showcase. To explain, the miniature painting and miniature sculpting groups have a contest of sorts. Everyone votes on a subject, once decided everyone in the group paints or sculpts a figure on the subject chosen. It's not really a competition, there is no judging, and no winner, but just a collection of everyones work on a particular subject. I think it would be perfect for this group, we could vote on a subject for everyone to make their own paper miniature design and submit it when the deadline is reached. I would be happy to organize this myself, as it would give me the needed incentive to finally produce more than a sketch. I suppose it would be up to Patrick, this is his group after all. Thanks. JIM
I think it is a very good idea. Because I think that many peoples (including me) have (or can make) a couple of figures on a topic, which is not enough to play; but if we pool them, we could cover a period. So, if I don't have to organize it myself, you can count me in. Maybe the first step would be to make a poll about what peoples want (or the permanent open poll could be taken as a base). Patrick
Great, I'd love to organize it. Having checked the existing period poll, I see that Fantasy is the favorite right now. I would suggest a closed poll ending at the end of April for everyone to vote on a fantasy subject. I have no idea how to set up a poll, or even if I have the access to do so. Here's some possible vote choices for a Fantasy poll. RPG Characters, High Elf army, Wood Elf army, Dark Elf army, Dwarf army, Orc army, Evil army, Beastmen army, Feudal Knights army, Lizadmen army, Undead army, Monsters. That's just off the top of my head. The rules would be simple... scale shoud be about 28mm, everyone participating keeps their designs secret until the unveiling where they will be posted here in the files section. I'd like to get the poll up in a week or so, I'm already itching to get some made now! JIM

So, shall we swap out November? Already my brain cells are coming up with projects for each month 184-- Something for my scarecrow mods to ride 185-- Break-away bar furniture 186-- My Cybertruck, not the Musk version 187-- Rialto Bridge and a Mech (instead of wood timbers as I originally envisioned, I thought of the bronze horses on San Marco, and am working on a bronze Trojan Horse/ATAT thing) 188-- Some sort of Mech Tank or ruins 189-- Trying to get my hand and eye back. Been sketching a couple ideas. Iffy, but maybe 190-- Space Port utility vehicles/bots. The first Streetpaper Advent model has me thinking 191-- I'm thinking either lab/crypt/den furniture. Maybe a figure 192-- Way too many ideas 193-- We really need to nail this down 194-- I'm sure I will have a lot of stuff that needs finished up

I really enjoy the idea that was mentioned about Castles, Court ladies and champions. Like someone could do a mini keep, another or several could do a market or mini faire type area with jugglers and hawkers of all kinds, I personally would like to tackle the jousting field, fence and spectator stands if someone else could handle the jousters, horses and spectators, royalty etc as my figure drawing is still mostly rubbish. This could really be a great plasebilmo set if we could get enough people on board. Even if you don't think you could do a lot, even one piece would be great and we have almost a year!

I already started sketching some buildings for a small hamlet... Around this time of the year, TV in Germany is full with fairy tale films, esp. the old ones from Czech, GDR, and Russia, but also newer one that were produced by various national TV stations. Usually, the depicted tales are from the collections of the Brothers Grimm. Anyway, these films offer some pretty good inspiration, especially, if you want to add a certain twist or flavor to old farm houses and such, making the buildings non-magically magical. You know what I mean?

It's how I would describe the buildings in fairy tale movies. For example, Rapunzel's tower is basically nothing special, however, if you look at the depiction in "Tangled", it looks like a magical place... Or the lonely cabin, Snow White finds in the woods: It would be nothing special, was it not too small for regular humans, but just fitting for dwarves... In "Snow-White and Rose-Red", the small farm of the girls and their mother should basically look like any other farm/cottage of the late middle-ages or early modern times, yet the description of all the neat details and the two rose-bushes, especially, makes the farm stand out... It's the typical fairy tale style of description that gives these basically non-magical palces the magic touch, even (and especially) when there is no magic involved.

I went ahead and swapped out November.
We need to set the ground rules on it, though. I think most of the comments lead to wanting 'almost historical', not the super-fantastic items that we normally consider. But that doesn't mean nothing unusual. My gosh, look at some of the fantastic things of a truly historical nature. I really like the Non-Magically Magical concept. I don't know if we are ruling out legend and fable, though.
Thoughts?

Legend and fable should be okay, as fairy tales and knightly legends are a typical thing of medieval literature. So, what might be the fantasy elements of those stories? There are dwarves, elves (or fairies), dragons, giants, gnomes, and witches. However, they appear ever so subtle, and much less prominent than in modern fantasy stories. Yes, the evil queen in Snow White is a witch, but she is defined as being the evil queen that envies Snow White's beauty to the girl's death... There is a lot of magic in the Arthurian legend, but it weaves subtly into the knight's quests to find the holy grail and other artefacts of legend... In the Nibelungenlied ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibelungenlied), there is a dwarf that guards a huge treasure (the Rhinegold), a dragon whose blood turns Siegfried (the hero) impenetrable, a sword that never fails to cut (Balmung), yet not the fantasy elements define the story, but the drama between the characters, the intrigue, revenge, murder, and lies... Typically, every fairy tale has a specific fantasy element, from dwarves that rescue a princess, or the big bad wolf, to wish-granting fish, and ghostly apparitions... Since these stories were used to teach morale standards and virtues, and to show ideal characters and how society should work, back then, it would be only natural to include a few of those "magical" elements, as well. EDIT: I remembered the perfect example of the style most appropriate to this hoard: the 1980's HTV/Goldcrest TV show "Robin of Sherwood" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_of_Sherwood)... It perfectly shows what I initially meant.
