I have decided to rework the Ca Dario riva to look more like this I will not be recreating the gothic style palazzo in the picture. I have decided instead to adapt Shep's Casa Rosata. I hope I can create something sympathetic to the original design. For Casa Rosata see onemonk.com/venice.html

Detailing the roof on Casa Rosata. Using windows by Vermin King, I added skylights on the back (pavement side) of the roof, to suggest servants quarters. I will be mounting chimneys from Ca Dario to the ends of the flat roof section

I raised the rear door and windows to the level of the side windows. The blank wall under the rear door will be hidden behind the riva. On the final build, I may need to add steps under the door

Update: After a quick test build, I found that the new position of rear doors and windows matches the sides. The door sits right on the 2 inch riva

I decided to simplify the roof support. I added tabs to the inner floor and cut out the centre, before mounting it at roof level. For added detail, I backed the upper level with paper reprints of the wall textures, this also gave me a guide for positioning the roof. The castellations were a nightmare to cut out.

The front of Casa Rosata with the roof in place. The chimneys make the building look a lot taller than it actually is. This building will sit on the waterline, backed against the riva, like Ca Dario

The rear of Casa Rosata. The finished riva will extend four inches behind Casa Rosata and two inches behind Ca Dario. I intend to create a courtyard with David Graffam walls.

With Casa Rosata ready for my table, I am designing the new riva. I am unsure if I should continue the grey mediaeval brick facing to match the rest of the table. Alternatively, I could face this riva with red mediaeval brick to blend in with the two palazzo.

I am thinking about extending the back of Casa Rosata with stairs leading to a long balcony and an arcade with columns underneath. With this in mind, I reversed the doors and windows.

After a lot of trial and error (much of it error, I forgot Photoshop has the option to use a 1 inch grid), I made the final reworking of the rear of Casa Rosata. The door has been moved to the upper level, 4 inches from the base and will be accessed by stairs leading up from the courtyard (stairs from a Merchant Prince house). The gothic window at the lower right will be covered by the stairs, the one at lower left replaced with a different door. The stairs will be part of a walled courtyard with arcade and balcony. The next part of the build will be creating the courtyard.

I had intended to have two or three gothic arches spanning the arcade in my courtyard but have decided against this for a few reasons. Firstly, the arcade is only 3 inches wide and 2 inches tall (the arches would have to be very close together and the pillars very narrow). Secondly, this is the yard of a merchant's house and doesn't need to be that fancy. Thirdly, finding suitable parts (or Photoshopping them) has proved more difficult than anticipated. I have decided to take a more rustic approach with wooden posts, to match the existing texture on the sides of the stairs. With this in mind, I may adapt parts from one of Glenn Williams Western buildings.

After some issues fitting both buildings and ramo stairs, I decided to partly attach the stairs to the riva. The Casa Rosata side of the stairs was given a matching brick texture to help with the illusion To hold the stairs in place, I glued the end tab on the riva wall to the front edge of the stairs. The end tab on the riva wall behind Ca Dario was folded round and glued to the back edge To cover the gap and complete the illusion. I added a trachyte edging strip to join with the top of the stairs

The finished riva. Casa Rosata will be on the left. Ca Dario on the right Viewed from the rear. The rear wing of Ca Dario and the San Cristoforo bridge fit into the gap in the edging. The area behind Casa Rosata is for the walled courtyard

Working on the walls for the courtyard. I planned to use the David Graffam Low Walls set, as I like the edging bricks at top and bottom. The only issue is the height of 2", which would put the back door at the top of the walls The 3.5" walls are a better height but lack this detail. I am considering creating a Hybrid wall in Photoshop. I wish Dave had done PSD versions of both walls as print and scan is proving a nightmare. I have decided to purchase the PSD version of Dave's Mediaeval Walls and copy and paste the extra detail from the Walls at Rakes Corner set. If I arrange the layers right, I should be able to blend it together and have the weathering.

The hybrid wall works. 3.5" tall with brick edging. This should be a near perfect match for the 2" high wall beside the ramo stairs

The finished walls with a Carnevale figure for scale. The 2" high wall at left is from David Graffam's Low Walls set. The 3.5" walls are my hybrid design

The walls mounted on the riva. If possible these won't be fixed in place, for ease of storage The view from the rear of Ca Dario. The gate is from the Papierschnitzel cemetery set with the top spikes removed. It has the added advantage of hooking into the gate posts, allowing the courtyard walls to be split into two sections. The back post will overlap San Cristoforo bridge by a quarter inch but any other configuration would have left an awkward gap

While working on the courtyard walls, I have been in discussion with my good friend Chris (lightning) cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/user/1969 trying to work out a practical solution to the courtyard steps. after looking at various images of Ca D'Oro courtyard, Chris decided to recreate these steps for me.

The final white version in place. Chris created "functioning" steps to blend better with the other buildings (a tricky bit of design). I have decided to move the door at the top of the stairs so that everything lines up better. The finished stairs will glue flush to the high walls.

Before unveiling the textured steps, a quick demo of how they were built. Credit goes to Chris for the pictures (my bench is never that tidy) starting at the point everything printed and creased First, cut out the large white piece from page 1 and the two top pieces from page 2. Fold all the tabs inwards. You will notice that the small tabs on the larger piece have horizontal folds. The tabs on the smaller pieces have vertical folds. This is key to the stairs design

Cut out the section with the arches and the railing part. Build the balcony railing with the extension pointing down. At this stage, I recommend leaving the wall end of the railing unglued

Glue the two sides of the railing together (this bit is a little tricky). Push the balcony section through the gap and attach by the hanging tab
