One of the big new RPG releases from Free League this year was Dragonbane, as Free League describe it: " Dragonbane is the reimagined version of the classic Swedish fantasy RPG Drakar och Demoner, a tabletop roleplaying game full of magic, mystery, and adventure." It's a fast-paced, entertaining game (for instance, it has ducks, thanks to its origins in the Chaosium RPG Runequest back in the day!), and makes a pleasing first RPG for newcomers to the concept. Following-up on the original KickStarter package and retail releases of the main rules over the summer, the first follow-up materials have just gone up for preorder on the Free League webstore today, a Bestiary and a separate set of 2D card standees, the first such standees they've issued for this game. Details are a bit scant on the minis so far, as the full set will have 62, but the only images so far show just ten, and from the coy presentation, I suspect these will sadly not have back art, although the face art is a sharper, cleaner version of the artwork used in either this book (yes, yes, I've preordered it already, and got the free PDF download immediately, so I have checked - standees are NOT included with the book's PDF though), or the main rules. Said artwork is a delight, as usual with Free League's publications more generally. I may never play the game, but I love the art! If any of this sounds interesting, you may care to check the actual products on the Free League webstore - Dragonbane page link. There's a free PDF Quickstart available there too, if you'd like to learn more about the RPG for no cost. There's options to buy just the standees, or the plastic bases, or a bundled set with the new Bestiary, and it's worth noting they have distribution hubs in the EU, USA and UK, so shipping for those places isn't as horrendous as you might fear!

I just checked out the free sample pdf of this game the other day. The art is in a fun style. I am not thrilled about some of the game mechanics but I am sure it will be fun for some.

Well, having come through from the original white box D&D set, and as a tabletop wargamer for many years before that, we were used to having to change and make up the rules to fill gaps from the start, so rules are only rules - they're not that important, as the game's the thing! And yes, Dragonbane won't suit everyone, but I do love the art (and the quality of the printed Free League products in general).
