When I was about 11, after I blew up the garage with my chemistry set, my parents bought me a typewriter. They thought I couldn't do much damage with a typewriter. Boy, were they wrong! I've been a professional writer, editor, and author for 52 years, and my personal mantra has often been, "Be a nuisance when it counts." I've been building scale models since I was about 7 years old -- planes, trains, cars, armor and other stuff. I discovered paper models about 25 years ago and have been scale modeling in paper ever since, with rare detours into wood or plastic kits. These days, I build mostly airplanes and spacecraft from kits and model railroad structures from scratch. My father flew C-47s and C-46s in Europe in 1944-45, and I always knew I wanted to fly. Wearing glasses ruled out a flying career, but I finally got my Private ticket at age 40 and flew actively for about 20 years in club airplanes -- Cherokee, C-150, TriPacer, and C-172. Working as an aviation journalist, I also got to fly a lot of other people's airplanes, a few minutes at a time. I'm lucky enough to live 20 miles from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the epicenter of general aviation, and I've attended 36 annual Oshkosh fly-in conventions, usually as a member of the press and lately as part of the Warbirds crew. My other interests are bicycling, sailing, photography, history, reading, writing, and travel. I'm proud of my Scottish heritage (my mother was a McIntyre Scot) and I wear a kilt for any excuse. I have two grown daughters, one in IT and one in military intelligence. I live with my wife Christal, a retired physician, and two neurotic house cats. If you don't count politics, life is good.
