I know someone else uses/mentioned scribus somewhere. I've managed to figure out a workflow for using it to generate layered PDF's. It's not what you'd call quick or easy but I've found no other alternative free software to create layered pdfs. If anyone knows of a free app/cheap app (most commercial stuff is $500+) that does this easily I'd appreciate a link to it . (ie convert gimp layers to PDF would be nice...) Alternativly if there is no other option and peps are interested I'm happy to do a bit of how to thing for scribus?

Check with Clifford Button (Nebeltex) over at www.papertigerarmaments.com I believe he's a Scribus user if I remember correctly.

I have not really played with the layering options, yet. It is on my to do list. I imagine that there are quite a few things that might work out nicer with layers. Even Jim's standard uncolored minis could just be added as an optional layer over the color set. It may make the overall file smaller.

Anita just tried it on her turtles. It looks like it works pretty well. The layers do cut down on the overall file size by a little.
Just to compare, Sirrob, the steps we used where to create the layer, Nudge the images in the top layer into place by using the X and Y parameters in the image properties, and then just export (remembering to include layers and change it to PDF 1.5).
I am sure you can put this more eloquently in your tutorial. ;D

I actually cheated with mine and simply made multiple copies of the same imported image and pasted them into new layers then simply imported a new image to that imagebox for each layer everything ended up aligned spot on...okay re-reading that it, it sounds as clear as mud

I understand what you mean. I did the same with the latest project. I found an issue with Scribus, though. It appears that the PDF layers can only be set to Print or Not Print. The third option Prints When Visible is missing. This really kills the layer functionality. At least from the standpoint of printing only what you want.

Hmm, I was hoping that was just me... I've been trying to hunt down a fix, but no luck yet, I think a bit of javascript might be needed or something... very annoying wished I'd noticed it before I went to all the trouble of laying the stuff out...

I did find a way that will work to get your buggy fixed. Download the Trial Version of Acrobat Pro open up the Scribus PDF (for some reason this crashes the first time you try and load it, so try again). If you right click on each layer you can set it to Print when visible. Also you'll want to set the visible to Visible when on. I opened a bug/feature request with Scribus, but so far I am still trying to explain what I'd like it to do. Fixing it, I imagine, will be a long way off.

Sirrob, The team that is working on Scribus has targeted this for version 1.5.1svn. Right now they are working on a major port of all the changes to a stable 1.5, so this may be a while. In the mean time, if you are still having trouble with your buggy, let me know and I can help you out.

Jabbro thanks for the offer I tapped one of my mates who's a graphic designer he had access to adobe suite took him about 5mins to take my scribus layout and port it to an indesign layout so the work wasn't wasted at least At least there working on it, found your bug report, beat me to lodging . Hopefully by the time I do my next vehicle Scribus might be print/view layer capable for pdf creation. As with all free software time to just wait patiently

I'm glad you got it fixed. I'd hate for you to lose all that work.
