Anyone know of a good tutorial, or have some advice, for making textures that would be used on ground tiles?
My recent attempts seem to turn out like mottled messes, not very crisp or identifiable like the ones I usually see.

I'm no expert but here's what I do if I'm doing say flagstones for example. I pretty much start from the ground up: ~ Start with a big stone surface photo ~ Cutout some flagstone shapes ~ Apply some filters to get some round worn edge looks and lose some of that I'm a photo look (sorry I pretty much experiment as i go till i get the look I want) ~ Build up some mortar same as the above ~ Stick your stones into the mortar ~ Apply some shadows and wear etc ~ Apply moss, dead leaves, bones, blood...rusty weapons ~ Make a few different ones up and assemble into a room/hallway etc Slowly you get a library of parts and textures...That or just grab a flagstone photo and colour it as you want .

I never really thought of starting with a photo, but once I read it it makes perfect sense.

I've used the grass (and dirt) in my yard, bricks at amusement parks, and the ceiling in a cruise ship cabin. Right now I'm using photos of a walk through of Meso-American ruins to produce a set. Photos can get you little details that add realism. Surprisingly, a good cell phone camera will work, so you don't need to lug a camera about.
If you've got Photoshop and want a grid, PS has a mosaic tiles filter that will yield semi-regular flagstones simply by creating a layer above your textures, filling, then applying the filter (and crank down the fill and opacity %). Quick and dirty.
