I would think a hairdryer would work just as well and would have a lower risk of accidentally scorching or burning a figure (or my whole desk ;D)

Sounds dangerous. I'd suggest a hair dryer instead.

I actually never bothered with making glue dry faster. I mainly use glue sticks, and they are solid after 5 minutes or so. Generally, I'd recommend hot air rather than burning gas .

I use spray glue which dries in seconds for most stuff and tacky PVA for almost everything else. If I need something to dry fast I leave it under a spotlight I have fitted over my desk (hot air works great, but it's a pain if you are drying anything small as it tends to send them flying). I cna't see a time when I'd consider drying glue faster as important as not burning my house down
