A little time ago, I started using 4mm thick adhesive corkboard tiles as modular tiles for miniature games. It took me a while to think about trying to use them to create miniature bases . Here are the results: I print a template with a strip of octogonal flat bases, cut a piece of the corkboard of the same width and glue them. After cutting the bases, I make a slit with the hobby knife and then proceed to "dig" it with a toothpick, until it properly fits the miniature tabs. In the end, this isn't very different from creating bases with foamcore as I've seen in other threads. Still, it is an alternative that I thought was worth mentioning. A possible advantage is that you get the cork texture that looks like sand or dirt.

I like the tile idea at any rate. Foamcore seems to want to move too easily, disturbing the whole scene.
I think the cork bases would hold up better over time as well.
