Excellent description. Are you by chance an engineer?

Got the first Holt 3-wheel steaamtank laid out and ready to build as a blank white model. I'll start texturing after I confirm some of my build assumptions. I'm also looking at options and expansions to the basic tank; right now I've got the basic historical version, a blitzbox version (you can never have too many gatlings), and a command tower version with a signal mast. What other build options should I think about including on this beastie?

As this is very reminiscent of some of the early WWI tanks, I'd like to see a full height sponson for each side with machine gun positions, behind the front wheels. Kind of a half hexagon as looking down from the top. As this looks like a trench/barbed wire clearing beast, how about a bulldozer blade option for the front. Hmm, I wish I had a reduced pic ...

I love those experimental vehicles, the Laffly would have been such a beast. I haven't worked on a bulldozer blade yet but I've been doodling ones with a "V" shape instead of a flat plow. Bigger sponsons is good, definitely adds to the bulkiness of the vehicle. I redid the command version to be an open topped signals cab;

Plowblade, not certain about the strength of the bars holding it, guess I'll find out soon; And one last variant, a siege cannon; Much to test-build this weekend.

First white build of basic steamtank package (with the best texturing job ever!); Doing the wheels a bit different this time around; since there's so much bulky mass involved the wheels will be solid with a wrap-around rim piece and the axles will insert into the wheel itself instead of just relying on a glued butt joint to hold it up. Only one page of notes of quirks and recommendations, nothing major. Tomorrow I'll test out the four options packages.

The chubby version; And the revised siege cannon bow piece; I'm glad I'm doing a "white" build on this one, they're tedious, but I keep finding little hiccups that are easy to fix at this stage, once they're spotted, and a real chore to amend once I've gotten deep into texturing. Plus I'm seeing different combinations of parts now that a physical model is in my hands instead of a 3d model on the screen. Next up is the flying bridge option.

I like chubby one but I'd like also basic version + siege cannon (with more low "tower" perhaps) on top => ie located in middle (instead like in chubby version where cannon is located just above big wheels) - probably due to overall proportions? Just mine 2 coppers - this will be awesome vehicle anyway

Thanks folks, since the full-sized sponsons are the most popular mod they'll definitely be included in the base set. The base model is the skinny version and is based on Holt's original steamtank design. Once I wrap up the Reinhold for the November Hoard I can get back to work on what I am now calling the 3-Wheel Steamfort. Should be out before Christmas. In January I'll be presenting William Littel's All-Terrain Armored Steam Ambulator; a steamtank based primarily on the Little Willie design but with upgrade and customization possibilities added in. test-build are going well for this one. Here's a parade shot of my current projects with a Steam Tower inserted for scale reference;

I redid the command version to be an open topped signals cab; I can see the command tank in a non-military "Safari" version with a tasseled sun shade trundling across the savanna, hunting dinosaurs.

Sunshade awning, good call. I've added it to the work pile.
