Currently Canon seems to be working towards the two ends, highly complex modelers or first-timers/kids. If you look at their site through the Wayback Machine, some of their buildings of the world collection are more mid-level models that look nice, but aren't so fiddly. I forget which years had costumes of the world, but I'm currently doing a bunch of those for my grandmother's nursing home.
Looks like I'm going to be doing a rotating series of models for a display case in their day room and a few larger models for the two TV rooms and the small lounge/library.

Nursing homes and a veteran's widow. I love how you find ways to do meaningful things with this hobby that I consider a personal indulgence. Very cool. and I will have another look at the Canon site. I downloaded a bunch of animals as "research" years ago and your description seems apt: quite complex or very simple.
