I've been working on another set of Starfleet Battles ships and I've run into a little snag. I want to be able to reflect the different color schemes specified by the boarders the ships are assigned to and I've seen some models in layered pdf form that would do the trick. I've done my models in Inkscape and I've experimented with Scribus and made a working pdf that does what I want it to do. Here is the problem, I have some blurs that represent glowing engines and other lit up fixtures on the hull of the ship. The blurs do not convert into Scribus. Nor do the convert into Illustrator. Now within Illustrator, I can use Gaussian blurs but they just don't look as good as the original blurs I did in inkscape. Can anyone give me some suggestions or advice?
Thanks, Sandtable

I might not be grasping the full issue, Can you not export the ships from inkscape as png then lay those out in Scribus, rather than the raw svg files inside scribus?

When I try to do that, I get a message that says that the png file is not in an acceptable format and that it may be damaged or may have been produced in a later version of Scribus.

Quick reply as I'm running off somewhere I'm guessing your trying File>>Open>>Something.png? Try Insert>>Insert Image Frame Draw a square on the page Then right click the frame and first option "Get Image" Then right click adjust "frame to image" size and Preview Settings>>Full resolution Let me know if that works

Thanks, that works and yet not... Let me clarify what I'm doing.
In star fleet battles (SFB), the various races have different paint schemes for their fleets. The hydrans have, for example, gray to blue/grey hulls with a large band of a specific color to indicate the location of service. A dark blue stripe for the Klingon boarder, a green one for the Lyran boarder etc. I want to make a pdf that incorporates all these color combos so I can print any of the color combos necessary by checking the layers I want to print. So by laying out my layers, I have this setup in this order:
Details- The glowing engines, weapon ports etc. These overlay all the lower layers and are what contains the blur effects I'm trying to preserve Panels- The panel layout on the hull done at about 40% transparency so the lower colors will show through Blue stripe-Klingon Border white stripe-Expeditionary Fleet Green stripe-Lyran Border Purple stripe-Home Fleet Red stripe-Old Colonies Gold stripe-Liberation Fleet Black stripe-Royal Fleet Blue/Grey hull Grey hull Black and white hull-for colored or metallic paper or to allow the player to color them with markers if desired
When I follow your directions, I do get the details layer very clean but the pieces are not on a transparent layer, thereby hiding all the lower layers with a white layer with details on it.

Purely guessing but it sounds like an on export issue from Inkscape and your png's don't have a transparent background. Not sure how your exporting from inkscape, but try selecting just the elements/objects you want to include on the layer, then File>>export bitmap but change the extension name to .png and tick the little box that says "Hide all except selected". this should then export just those elements as a transparent png. Assumign that works okay, to save you some time in Scribus you can make all your pngs the same size To assist with aligning in Scribus. Basically select all your objects in inkscape then write down x0,x1,y0,y1 and width/height. Then select only the elements you want to export but select Custom on the export screen and input those values. Hard to explain with no pictures but I sort of covered exporting in this blog post although it's not the main focus it should give the general idea. Let me know how you go, I apologies if I'm going down the garden path....

I think I'm finished with the Hydrans. Does the forum have an upload section to post them to?

I think generally, we either link to an outside site or you post the png/jpg images

Are these ships 2.5d or full 3d? Either way they look great (perfect for Full Thrust!). How long is the build time on each ship? I would love to see more spaceships here Try posting the pngs directly using the forum's uploader (be sure to select the best quality option that is available) or post a public dropbox link in a new thread in the new member artists section. (http://cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/board/74/new-member-artists) You could also post them in cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/board/37/fan-art-member-exclusives if you want to make them available to site members only.

Sorry I haven't responded for so long. I've been busy with work and other responsibilities. Only the small ones (fighters and pt boats) are 2.5. The others are 3d. I can put a couple together in an hour. Actually, I had to take the ones I uploaded down. I got a cease and desist...nudge (nothing formal but an email making it clear they considered it a no-no)from Amarillo Design Bureau. I've started on some more generic fleets (Flying saucers and such) but I haven't made it too far yet.
