Evening at the Adventure's Guild: Who ninja'd the loot?
OldSchoolDM's Entry in the Papercuts 2014 Competition in the category of Papercraft in Action The party returns after a long day of adventuring... to divide up the loot, only to discover one of them took it! This upsets the amazon... These images were as taken with an iPhone 5s and only rotated and cropped. No other digital effects were appiled. It's all only lights and paper and a dropcloth. Build notes: This is a heavily modified version of the Merchant's Guild and Battlemap by Mystic Mountain Productions jjensen I used an elongated version of the ground tile from Winterhawk: Ruins from Fat Dragon Games as the base for these photos. fatdragontomThe minis are Endless Miniatures - Heroes Volume 1 from Nemo Works NemoThe furniture is by Eddnic and available Free. eddnicThe large mini bases are retextured from those design by Brave Sir Kevin of Kev's Lounge bravesirkevinThe tower door arches is from the Archway by Peter Fitzpatrick. The tower roof is a heavily photoshopped image printed on vellum. I found the original at StainedGlassDome.com. The spiral staircase, smaller bases for the staircase, and the split second story staircase design are original with me. I will probably share them as part of the kitbash thread that I will update after the contest voting is over.

I love the way you did the lighting and used the transparent windows.
Did you put an electric candle inside to get that effect?
The interior is also really amazing!

afet, 8rad - Thanks! All of the submissions in the Papercraft in Action category represent a large number of hours of construction. :-) I started this model to be a live-play set piece and only decided to amp it up when I learned the contest due date. I think there is 20-30 hours in that model, including several white-paper prototypes for interior features. More on that after the contest!

Oooo, those are nice. And cheap! Thanks! I'll have to see if there is something like that at the hardware store near my house. Ryan

Wonderful model of course, but doesn't this electric candle mean this entry should be in the "Papercraft Mixed Media" category, not the "Papercraft in Action" one (Quote: "Entries must be completely in paper")? Particularly given that vellum (the tower roof) is calf's skin, not paper?

Wonderful model of course, but doesn't this electric candle mean this entry should be in the "Papercraft Mixed Media" category, not the "Papercraft in Action" one (Quote: "Entries must be completely in paper")? Particularly given that vellum (the tower roof) is calf's skin, not paper? The arch-judge/admin/contest host as already endorsed this entry here and on Facebook. Lighting is required for all photography, so I don't see how that's "mixed media." There is no rule saying the lights must be external or not-visible in the shot. And the vellum is sold as "Premium Cardstock: Clear Translucent"* and I printed on it with the same printer used on the other types and weights of cardstock used in the model. The base is also mounted on cardboard. I guess you might argue that's not paper either? See cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/4405/darice-clear-translucent-95gsm-cardstockwyvern, I'm not sure why you posted this. At first I thought it was snark, but the smiley faces are missing. And rather than ask in a PM, you posted it? By your reasoning there will be no non-black entries in the "all paper" category - as they are all artificially lit, also contain printer ink and glue, and marker ink and backdrops and... Why the nits? Have I offended you in some way? * " Vellum" is vernacular for any translucent "paper" - not always made of animal skin. For the record, this is not made of animal skin, but I can't prove what it is made of, nor should anyone have to.

Apologies for the slow reply. CWF crashed twice on me while online yesterday, then I got called away urgently and didn't get back. CWF has been running slow again today for some reason too. The arch-judge/admin/contest host as already endorsed this entry here and on Facebook. I don't use Facebook, and wasn't aware the "like" here endorsed a given category entry, but given that, all well and good. Lighting is required for all photography, so I don't see how that's "mixed media." There is no rule saying the lights must be external or not-visible in the shot. Lighting is certainly essential for the subject to be usefully imaged, but this electric candle appears as a central element in part of the internal scene, so it isn't strictly a light just for illumination purposes. I thought you'd devised a papercraft mechanism to provide the fire effect using light channeled in from outside - maybe using a hidden tunnel with mirror card - until you explained otherwise. Vellum: This seems to be a difference between cultures. In British English "vellum" means calf-skin only, and in the UK the material you've used isn't called "vellum", but tracing paper or tracing film (judging by its appearance and weight in your linked topic, certainly). Your use here is of course fine under the circumstances as you've now explained them, so I withdraw that point. wyvern, I'm not sure why you posted this. At first I thought it was snark, but the smiley faces are missing. And rather than ask in a PM, you posted it? It was a simple couple of questions which seemed to me wholly appropriate to ask here. I did wonder if you'd accidentally posted the entry into the wrong category, in which case you'd at least have had the chance to move it before it was disqualified, were that to have been the case. But it also occurred to me that perhaps I was missing something key that would benefit from more discussion - as it turned out I was for the "vellum" at least. Plus given that Gilius had posted his splendid diorama A "mexican standoff" in the ruined city in the "Mixed Media" category, despite the fact there looked to be nothing that wasn't papercraft in it (until he explained), I assumed the rules were being very tightly applied. Have I offended you in some way? Not that I'm aware of - till now anyway

Gentlemen, Gilius chose that category and that was fine. Vellum is in paper section here with the other drafting supplies, it's shiny and slick and all of my final projects for theatre design had to be presented on vellum. I'm pretty sure what's available her is not made out of calves anymore. The emphasis of the presentation was on the papercraft involved, the little internal light served to amply illuminate the interior scene without actually being the focus of the presentation. IMHO it was fine, it was a presentation about papercrafts, not about lights. Thank you both for being so publicly courteous.

Great mods to the building Randy! The vellum windows is a great addition. The interior looks great and cozy with the fireplace (shows you how small buildings really are in that time period). My ultimate favorite mod though the stained glass roof! With the lighting, it really makes the building stand out. Major props for taking the time to kitbash the Merchant's Guild! It really looks cool! ps - it would be cool to see how the rest of the interior worked out for the building.

jjensen - I couldn't have done it without such an inspirational and detailed model to start with! More photos of the entire model after voting has closed... There is a lot more to see!

It seems a really impressive work, to me! Btw, there's the barbarian! I hadn't see him in the first three photos and I was kind of getting worried

Seeing the new images was a real treat, however, I ventured out to your Flickr site and checked out the full gambit of photos of the modified build. All I can say is WOW! What an amazing transformation! The whole interior design was exceptionally well done. Awesome work! Thank you for posting.

I just noticed the monk hanging upside down. I hung her between the support crossbeam for the alcove and the 2nd story by her stand - I even printed an underside-of-the-ceiling textured stand. There are one or two little things like that in there (though some were only visible in the extended views.) Adventurers' Guild by Oracle Omega, on Flickr
