Been turning around in my head the idea of doing an underwater terrain set., like a customizable coral reef, maybe some Kelp, giant clams, maybe some aquatic life minis and mermaid dwellings. that sort of thing. Any other suggestions as to things that could be included? How useful would something like this be? I find underwater campaigns fun as hell, despite how much of a pain combat is in them.

mesper made a start on this kind of thing. I know there is one mermaid in an old Hoard, or maybe in the MMiP archive. Atlantian ruins and a sunken ship spring to mind as terrain besides coral and plants. I think someone ( mesper again?) had an underwater layer option on a ruins set. Also steam vents and underwater volcano could be cool.

I kind of got the idea for it from the Atlanthian set from WWG.
A volcano would be cool either underwater or above.

This sounds really interesting and cool, I'll let it percolate in my back brain for a bit to see if I can't come up with some ideas. The customizable coral reef would be good, as well as the steam vents and volcano. Kelp forests, even submerged sandbars or the Bimini block road. and a variant on the steam vents is the black smokers. Might be time to watch the National Geographic "Drain the Ocean" special again. They had some cool underwater tidal pools where temperature/pressure differences basically made undersea ponds and lakes where the water density changed. Possibly also a methane hydrate field with slowly releasing bubbles.. sort of an underwater minefield...

Another thing that has had it in the back of my mind for some time is "the croods" actually. There's a scene where the family is in an area on dry land where the local plant life looks exactly like a coral reef, and it looks totally cool and alien.
I'm thinking kind of a technicolor bright sort of neon finding nemo kind of look, but no too cartoony.
Some water textured pillars of various sizes would be nice too to simulate different depths while swimming. Maybe some tiny schools of fish on them.
There's also the Cthulhu themed items and architecture that a deep sea setting demands.
I've already got plenty of projects to get done., like the kobolds dwarves and the 2.5d Dragons, but it's fun to speculate on other ideas.

Sunken wrecks, or parts of them, would be useful too. Maybe a giant whale/sea monster/aquatic dinosaur skeleton similarly?
Reefs aren't just colourful coral gardens of course, as they can be simply underwater rocks. Plus dead coral reefs look like oddly white coral areas without any colours.
You might even think of doing a mod of something like the WWG Hinterland Cliffs or the Fat Dragon Dwarf Lords: Mountains set (Tom also has a forthcoming set from his recent KickStarter, Explorer: The Highlands which promises more of the same, but differently!) as the cliffs on the edges of continental shelves, where the shallow near-coastal waters drop suddenly towards the deep ocean floor. Those have multicoloured plant and animal forms (including in many non-tropical seas), which gradually reduce in number with increasing depth.
If you're going down the "minis" route, creatures/monsters/humanoids in swimming postures would be excellent. Useful to have the same characters in swimming and non-swimming poses as well, for undersea city/dungeon/cavern explorations.

Just a short note further to my last posting, as this evening, I picked up an e-mail to say the new Fat Dragon Highlands set should be released in about two weeks!

this almost has the makings of another stone soup type project, like the fold-flat staircase one...

Well got "kinda ready" some of these -- including sunken ships, underwater treasure chest and grotto and some Atlantis-style ruins (then there are also some fantasy sea warriors) -- nevertheless due to some circumstances I don't have time nor "clear mind" to finish these at the moment ( ...drowning...

so apparently BSGTony (lordzsezse) has a set of undersea tiles already which they released last year. still want to make my own stuff as I really don't care for using just tiles. very beautiful stuff though, way better than i could do.
