As an aside to this - anyone else think that there aren't enough Link paper minis out there.....? I did find a Homebrewed Zelda themed 5e campaign on Reddit, has monsters from the game, magic items, playable races, it looks fun!

Fitting the boat to a grid depends on the size of the grid. I suggest messing with scale until it "fits" into an even number of squares. Boats themselves don't lend themselves to being gridded. So often little boats to scale should be two squares wide and then you can't put a figure in the prow which is exactly where everyone wants to sit. I like gridless with measuring sticks for my ship based adventures.
