On the Ancient Egyptian building elements from Papermau topic elsewhere on the CWF, a couple of people mentioned having problems in downloading those items from Mauther's site because he's now using AdFly to host his models. Today (2016 Sep 26), he posted this explanation:
A lot of friends of the blog are asking why I put my original models to download via ADfly. They say that ADfly is a mousetrap full of malwares and virus, but the thing is not so bad. In this post I will teach how to download via ADfly without need to install any program or buy anything.
The reason why my original models are being posted via ADfly is that the blog generates a series of expenses that in this moment I can not afford to pay out of my pocket. And I have to pay for host images on Photobucket and still have to pay for one of the most expensive Internet connections in the world, which is from Brazil. I'm at a crossroad: either the blog generate money to stay or will I have to stop it. I do not want to require money from blog friends and I am not naive to think that asking for donations would solve. I barely get thanks for the models, what to think of receiving money, then? That's it, I'm sorry but Papermau original models will continue to be posted on ADfly until I find another way to keep the blog.
You can find the original in full (and in Portuguese), along with a simple explanation of how to avoid problems with AdFly when downloading the models, here.
However, the original comments on the CWF suggested there were actual problems with files not downloading, not simply the irritating AdFly messages, but whether those were simply initial glitches, I'm less sure. I have to say too, that when I downloaded those Egyptian models, I did follow the protocol suggested by Mauther, but STILL got an unwanted advert page which forced me to click again to get away from it (and a similarly unwanted anonymous "Download" box when trying to get the other model), rather than just avoiding these and going straight to the download page. I've not tried downloading anything more from the site since (though not because of this AdFly matter), so these difficulties may no longer apply, but it's perhaps worthwhile folks here knowing there may be some minor ones.
Regarding the need for such adverts at all, I think everyone here will sympathise with Mauther's predicament, which is much as I'd supposed in that earlier topic. As I also said there, if the two Egyptian model direct download links I added may cause problems for Mauther, I'll freely remove them. If anyone does find downloading models from the site blocked because of AdFly in future though, I'm sure we could resolve it here, perhaps via a simple request on the Forum, and a PM reply, so the links aren't made public-access.
Beyond that, is there maybe an alternative funding mechanism anyone could suggest for Mauther? Maybe some kind of tip-jar system that could be easily set up which might defray some of the costs? I'm sure we'd all wish to see such a wonderful website continue, and I'd guess the community here has more than enough people with experience of exactly these kind of problems to be able to assist in some way.
