I don't know how common this is, but I imagine it is very common. My dad has few wants or needs, and as soon as he wants or needs anything, he gets it before he lets anyone know he wants or needs it. Mothers Day is easy. Mom always wants cut flowers (something she doesn't have to keep alive). Dad is more difficult. You have to guess at something he doesn't know that he might want or need. So, I am building the Iris Greeting Card by Clide from Thingiverse, www.thingiverse.com/thing:8788You can download the template there and view the build video (when he gets to folding over the front tabs 'Fold under carefully' means 'Fold under the ring carefully') So, here's the pages I printed Yes, I threw my latest version of the sail mounts on the page. I was afraid I might have unsmooth cuts which would cause binding, but that wasn't an issue. It actually seems to move easier the more I mess with it. I have yet to actually glue anything yet. I am trying to decide if the front and back panels need reinforcement. If they do, I need to make sure I don't cause any binding issues. The weak point in the whole thing is the flaps on the petals that fit in the three holes in the actuator ring, and in describing the situation, I believe I solved the problem. The flaps try to unfold when the ring is turned. They can't be glued down to the ring or the cover, but I can make a cap piece that will keep the flaps in place without binding. Just three circles that glue over the tabs. If you read my 'Blacksmith, not Magician' diatribe on what I loosely call a design methodology, I left out a part. I also write rambling posts which trigger something in my brainbox that switches a light on so that I more clearly see problems and their solutions. What can I say. I think it worked one more time

I was going to take a few photos showing the iris opened and closed and then show where I would glue the caps, only when I took the open photo, I moved the arm and the flaps on one of the petals slipped out of the ring hole. See second photo. I am so glad that I cut this out AFTER trash day. The three little circles cut out of the ring were still in the bin. By spot gluing them onto the flaps sticking up in the second photo, the flaps will not be able to come loose. After I finish this, I am going to go back and do a bit of a redesign. There should be a part sandwiched between the front and back also. It should be the shape of the front and back, cut out slightly larger than the ring, which will keep the ring steady. It will also need to be open where the actuator arm moves. The whole thing will be more stable. I should have started re-engineering this before I started. Even as I was texturing this, I was wondering how secure those tabs would be and how securely the ring would turn. Sometimes I should listen to that little voice in my head. But if I hadn't built it, I wouldn't have seen as clearly what needs done

Actually, gluing strips across the flaps does the trick. If you were wanting to use the iris more, you would want to also do the inner piece I described Now I have to decide which photo to fit into the slots on the back EDIT -- Use glue sparingly on those tabs when gluing the strips on, and make sure it is only on the tabs. I'm going to let this set under weight overnight before finishing it up

Using the guides, the crescent moon cut outs, I started formatting some photos for Dad to stick in there. My grandson, my son's family, Mom and my grandson, Dad's dog Brookie, etc. I think I will put Mom and Warren in to start with.
I wasn't that good at aligning when I glued it together last night, so this morning, I trimmed off the mismatch. It now looks like a purchased card, and the iris works very smoothly. I still think I want to design an interior layer and an exterior piece to cover and protect the parts that go out the back. Not necessary, but helpful. Since the front and back covers have a mechanism in between, there are bulges in the surface that wouldn't be noticeable at all if there had been an interior 'surround' layer. And if one wanted to use this in a wall, you'd probably like to see 'wall' on the back, not the paper mechanism.
At this point, I just need to get things done, but I plan to do a new template tonight which I think would be more suitable to the gaming community. Then I will do a mock-up of a stone wall/floor with an orifice that opens, just to show one of the ways I see this being used.
When I say 'new template', I am only talking about my own parts. You would still need to download the basic blank template from the designer's website.

It isn't real easy to get photos to fit the insert points and still get faces to line up with the iris hole. Three were practically no problem, but I had to do photoshop-esque work for another three. I now have a template to gauge whether a photo will work, but printing on photo paper, the page needs to sit for a few hours before you do anything with it, so I stopped at six photos so I can deal with them before bedtime tonight.
Next step is to get my insert piece and back cover, then I want to do a couple versions for gaming. I'd like to do a sci fi portal and one that is more dungeon-y. For these, I am going to do a rear cover that just leaves a hole. No need to be able to slide photos in there. That's not to say someone else can't do it. I just don't see a need for what I am doing.

I don't think anyone would want a mechanical iris wall/ floor with rounded off corners, so those will have to go. If it is used for a wall, you need a way to keep it upright. I picture a couple large One Monk-style bases that you can place a floor tile over to cover. Probably need some sort of tabs at the ends of the walls. Any suggestions?
