Back in 2019 I lost my main computer at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Monday.
On Sunday night, I had thought, 'You know, I need to transfer my files to the newer computer. It's been a while.'
Listen to those little voices telling you to do things you know you need to do.
I lost so much. It was during my Wild Wild West project, and all of my work on The Wanderer was lost, as was the work on the Lincoln Funeral Train, and the Presidential Mansion in New York.
Yesterday, when I was doing my taxes and was ready to e-file, I needed info from my 2018 taxes to proceed. My IT guy has had my old computer since March, but only works on it in his spare time, but he had transferred the retrievable data to another hard drive while he was seeing if he could get the old computer working. He was able to free himself up so I could pick up the drive with the data and Yes, the 2018 tax return was on there and not corrupted.
Got the taxes submitted and had the money to pay the difference. And now I have the drive with my long lost files. Thus far I have only seen image files that were corrupted. PDF's seem fine.
But the trains are there. Whew!
Remember, boys and girls, Back up, back up, back up

It is a good thing I had that great day because yesterday I was pretty well down with a headache and neck ache.
I realized I had reorganized my files on the newer computer after I had started moving folders over. Things do not match. Last night I had to go through and organize all the files I had moved to the new computer. Ouch. I have only gotten about 10% moved, and I'm about 90% satisfied with how my folders are arranged. I still have a lot of duplicate files that need to be removed. Duplicate files are okay, if you don't modify things, but if you modify a file, you want it to be modified in each location it is stored or you pull up the wrong one when you need it.

Is there a Windows way to eliminate duplicate files? There's a programme called CCleaner. I have been using the free version to keep tidy PCs, that are running Windows, for over 10-years now. I have used it with Windows 7, 8 and now 10* and have never had a problem with it. This web-page gives a step-by-step howto to using CCleaner to find and remove duplicate files: How to Find (and Remove) Duplicate Files in Windows 10*All these PCs have been for work or other people's PCs/laptops, so I wouldn't use something that I though might bugger them up. Personally, I haven't owned a Windows driven computer for nearly 20-years.

I've run CCleaner about as long as you have, but with so many settings, once I got it to where it didn't knock out things I needed, I just run with those settings, not exploring other capabilities

Thanks for the info. I have an external hard drive that has maybe three copies at least of everything, and it is now full o.0

I was only kidding, but since the hard drive seems to be good in the old laptop, I will probably start using that drive for back-ups, once my IT guy gets it out of the shell. It was 1 TB and was only a little over half full, but that also had a lot of stuff from work, not just fun stuff
