I've often seen the vintage paper soldiers in vrious forums and on pinterest and I understand that some of these are only one-sided. Has anyone collected these and how do you present them if in a diorama and the side in view is the blank side? Do you prefer mirroring the image? Leave it blank? Color in a solid color? Thanks www.pinterest.ph/markmcnamara737/paper-soldiersfigures/

I generally avoid doing anything with front views because I am not satisfied with mirroring (which I have done several times). Side views I generally mirror the other side.
On rare occasions I have taken the time to mirror the back and then turn it into a back view. I do okay at it, but it takes me forever. It is a rare figure that I will invest that kind of time to do better work

Give me a few days and I'll try to write a concise answer.

I think it really depends on how you plan on using the figure
If I were going to use it as a figure in a game, I would want it to have a back. As part of a crowd, or in some cases, as an NPC, generally a mirrored back would work

That was fairly common, though, as vermin king says, it only makes sense to do it for side on figures. However, though I love old toy soldiers for the nostalgia, usually the images on the web or older paper figures tend to be pretty dingy, and by the time you've cleaned them all up, you'd have invested a lot of work.
Still, I can see it as a labor of love.

If I decided I want to use a figure in a game but it is not worth giving it a back and mirroring wouldn't work I just print it on scrap paper and mount it on a neutral coloured piece of card. I don't see any point in using ink to make a grey silhouette.

I am no artist, and so always do mirror image side views, as they are easiset to modify.
