Context is everything. When I read "Indian guide" and "Northwest Frontier" I thought Blackfoot and Mounties. Pretty successful test, I'd say.

thehobbybox Tell me how big are your photoshop sketches? Maybe some tutorial on how you design them? These were drawn around 3 to 4 times larger than 28mm. I use a brush pen when hand inking the pencils then I scan them into photoshop and fix the line work. shrinking them down to 28mm tightens up the lines. I based them on the stocky cartoon look of Foundry miniatures. Not really my style and preference but I'm looking for a style that suits the fragility of paper minis.

a bit more realistic in proportions, with watercolor shading. Am still mulling over front view vs side view.

a bit more realistic in proportions, with watercolor shading. Am still mulling over front view vs side view. These look great as paper minis. Even plastic, metal and 3d printed minis have to be a bit stocky at our scales to stand up to in-play handling. And while watercolors look great in a book, with 4-inch figures view viewed at 12-18 inches, inch-tall minis on the table really benefit from bold, exaggerated color. You're making all the right choices for our medium. Front or side view is a hard choice with minis of this period. Riflemen and cavalry are easier to draw in side view in the first place, and easier to differentiate on the table. But we almost always play sitting so that we are looking at our own force from the back, and our opponent's from the front, so side view minis become all but invisible on the table. Hmmm. No good answer there, although my instinct is side view, prioritizing appearance over playability. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, though, I would urge you to double the thickness (or more) of your black outlines, so people don't HAVE to trim quite so close!y.
