Hi guys, for the next era/civilization I will move towards the North into darker times: the Dark Age! Inspired by historical Viking and Saxon architecture I am working on buildings and defensive structures for this setting. Here is a first peek at a concept sketch I have done.
I have planned two smaller houses, the "triangle" shaped house and a regular house both with the "veranda" style front option and then a larger chieftains long house with some options for variety.
I also want to make some walls, towers, gate for defensive structures if there is interest for that.
Let me know if you have any special ideas or wishes for such a setting. Maybe I can work something into the to-do list!

I am starting with the A-frame "Triangle" house. There will be two main wall textures, Viking aka wood planks and Saxon aka wattle&daub front. Also there will be three roof versions: wood, thatched and grass. Finally I also provide the option for an "arcade" style entrance, meaning a recessed front wall with a veranda area and columns.
These with alternate options (shield decoration) and the usual color modifiers will give options for many unique looking buildings.
Thatched Viking
Thatched Saxon
Grass Viking
Wood Viking with arcade/veranda entrance

I'm a big fan. I tend to prefer stronger historic themes in the games I play.

I am hoping with the ornament options I will add that one could even go a bit fantasy too though. But even when one goes fantasy, I like it when the design is grounded in something real and historic.

Here are roof ornament options. First the very simple crossed bars.
Then a more head-like option ... yet still simple - for a simple house!
And finally an option going front to back.
For the larger house (and probably also for this one) I want to make more options later. Different animal heads like dragon, horse, raven to represent different clans.

I have been busy with adapting the next building set.
Interiors are done ...
Also went over the roof file and added all missing elements, like the undersides!
Of course there is also a "Saxon" texture version now.
Here are a couple of promo pic test builds ... I am going for "Viking" walls and wood shingle roof version.
Will check everything in the next days and start getting everything packed up for a release. I still need to do fold-flat parts and cutfiles but it shouldn't take too long

I love those! They are awesome and the middle one looks like the front to the King's chamber in Edoras.

I love those! They are awesome and the middle one looks like the front to the King's chamber in Edoras. That would be a very small Golden Hall but yeah. The Rohan culture aestetics was heavily influenced by Norse culture too, so no wonder they look similar. My favourite showcase mini, the Rohan commander, also doesn't help I want to make some horse ornaments too for Rohan and other horse cultures as an option. I was surprised during research that in parts of Germany there are still houses like that and they also have the horse signs. I am hoping to be able to at least kit bash the third house, the long house into something similar to the Golden Hall. This is the main module for the long house or chieftains house. There will be options to extend in several "directions" Or do it all at the same time! And finally add the deco options!

Here is a first test build of the core structure of the NVB3 long hall!
I have finished most of the texturing of the exterior of the main house and wanted to see what it looks like so far. There are so many options to choose from already
I have yet to complete the "Saxon" style wattle&daub version and of course the weathering. And then I have all the extension pieces to do for all the variations. But even just the main house looks quite interesting with the texturing! I am starting to think I need some sort of stone foundation too to raise it a bit. I have seen lots of historical buildings without but on the gaming table it would be a nice option to have.

Stone foundations are extremely rare on these. I think it is great to continue along this line. Late Dark Ages was when folks were building traditional-style buildings except putting them on stone foundations. I am not telling you to not do a stone foundation, but not to sweat too much about getting it done.
That being said, I imagine quite a few gamers would build it on a stone foundation...

I am not telling you to not do a stone foundation, but not to sweat too much about getting it done. That being said, I imagine quite a few gamers would build it on a stone foundation... I think Peter Jackson made that a thing when he put the Golden Hall which is inspired by Norse architecture on a huge stone foundation. I think it will depend on what gamers or builders want to depict. A historical Dark Age settlement would just have a plain long hall without much extensions and foundations. A fantasy gamer I expect to pack it all on the table
But you are right, this will be an option or maybe even a separate set for when I have completed everything else first.

Here is a little update. I got the extensions for the short wall side done. And I started putting them together
I noticed I need to go over the shields again to add more variety so there is no repetition of patterns but other than that I am very happy with the look so far.
Now I need to create the extensions for the other side going off the long wall. As I can reuse the walls I just need to texture the dormer roof parts.

During my tests of the expansion modules I realized that they not only work with the long hall but also with the other "Norse Village Builder" houses! YAY! It's not a big surprise because they all use the same geometry rules but I just didn't think of that before Because of that I will split this all up in two sets. One for the core Long Hall and one for the extensions - in case one only wants to extend the smaller houses. Also because I have received quite a few "urgent" questions about when it all will be released, I have decided to go for a "rolling release" this time. Meaning if you want you can already get the NVB3 (Long Hall) and NVB3E (extensions) sets on my Gumroad and start building with the things I have already completed. Right now it's basically all exterior for the Long Hall and all except the "Saxon" wall skin option for the extensions. It's all described in the product text to make sure and I'll update that. As soon as I have another section updated I will add them as an upgrade (obviously free) and let you guys know about it.
Next week I am going for the extension "Saxon" walls and once that's done I will start working on the interior and whatever would be missing then
