I've been motivated lately to put together some terrain for skirmish battles. The Dave Graffam Industrial zone made a great battlemat. So I thought I'd do another. I want something grassy as a generic outdoor sort of backdrop. I realised I had downloaded some Ebbles Grassy Mat pages and some Modular Hills. The mat went together quite easily, though I didn't use the patented connectors, just glued it, taped it and rolled it.
The hills were quite intimidating to a beginner like myself but I plunged on in and I'm really pleased with how they turned out. They are strong enough for metal figures and will be useful in a lot of different combinations. I still have some more straights and an inside corner to build but I know my next skirmish is going to have a hill or two involved!
By the way that's some of the jungle monoliths from hoard 181 doing duty as a stone circle on the top and one of El Cheapo minis Gang members taking advantage of the high ground.
Thank you Mr Ebbles!

I love those Ebbles hills, I've also gotten a lot of use out of them.

I'm hoping to get some use out of them myself. They look like one of those practical sorts of things that everybody will find useful but nobody thinks of, until one genius comes along. Then we all go "of course! Why didn't I think of that".
I'm tempted to print out just the corner sections again at half size and make them up so that I can have a higher peak to the hill if I need one.
Also, very tempted to get the highland set from Fat Dragon and combine them so that I can have a foothills of mountains kind of thing going on. I suspect that might be a bit much for a 3x3 kitchen table set up though!

Hi Antohammer. I was tempted by a wood just recently!
I've just been on a drive-thru shopping spree.
I usually add stuff to my basket over several days until it gets too unwieldy and I purchase the lot. I've just downloaded by most recent basket. Some of your generic Conquistadors (some of the Portrugese Conquistadors you hide at Wargames Vault as well ), Permes 30 years war bundle, some Dave Graffam sci-fi tiles and buildings and a couple of his town maps for turning into battlemaps. Fat Dragon was having a great sale with some great stuff at really good prices. I had added his Borderlands Keep Deluxe to my basket and was perusing his outdoor stuff, intending to pick up some highland stuff and one of the wilderness type sets with a good wood in it but before I could decide which ones would suit my purpose best the sale ended and my basket tripled in price. I had to make some hard choices and lost the wood I was looking at.
It's the old wargaming dilemma of how to represent an area of wooded ground, i.e. just the outline so that figures can move through it, or a solid clump of tree models or somewhere inbetween. I may have to use some of the tree models I have from your Phantasya sets and some of Kris at Crooked Staff's outdoor textures to make myself a "wooded area" but anything I knock up won't be as good as something purpose built.

A confrontation in the bocage. After sleeping in a ditch the last thing the guys needed in the morning was to meet Jerry in the lane!
Some more terrain efforts. (and a peek at some figures). The tiles are mproteau (Paper Realms) Paper Realms Kings Road preview set. Excellent, partcularly the range of what you get in a free set.
The figures are @reivaj WW2 US Rangers and lvmenes WW2 Germans. Good figures , I had to juggle scale a little to match sizes and still nobody does WW2 British!
The 2.5d hedges are a "scratch build" [ish]. The hedge bases are 6"x1"strips cut from Dave Graffam's Cropland tiles and pasted onto corrugated card. They have a base layer of mud with optional scatters of sparse grass which I thought looked good for this.
The hedges themselves are from kris Crooked Staff Print and Paste Wilderness textures trees. They are 5 and a half inch by 2 inch strips folded over an edge of some more corrugated card. I used two of the colours, I think they're supposed to be different seasons but I just wanted a little colour variation and I think it works well. The texture is brilliant, leaves with twigs and branches in it and I may use my offcuts later for some standalone bushes etc as scatter terrain.
They are glued down the centre of the DG strips with some Stick It all purpose adhesive I got from Wilko's and which, touch wood, seems to be fulfilling the same role as hot glue without the heat and the smell. I cut the ends of the tile strips back at at least 45 degrees so that I can have them meet at corners at most angles.
I'm pleased enough with them, that they will probably be showing up in my next skirmish. As far as lessons learned goes, If I were to do it again I'd have used double or treble thickness of corrugated card for the actual hedge part, I think they could stand a little more width.

After reviewing the kris Crooked Staff videos about wilderness scatter terrain, I was motivated to get myself a little more elevation for my table. I bought the caverns Print & Paste sheet to get the rock wall texture and followed the instructions in the two videos.
Here is my cascade of rock "steps" leading up to a grassed shelf on the fellside. Possibly a nice place for a picnic!
Your voice is a great calming influence Kris! Following the instructions I was able to knock up the bits in the picture in just a few minutes, in between other tasks. I really enjoy your videos and each time I've steeled myself to make something I've found your clear and concise delivery an excellent guide. Cheers!

Okay, using kris Crooked Staff textures again I've put together a gate. It was...a bit of a palaver. I particularly enjoyed the bit where I spread the glue on the wrong side of the cardboard! I'm not used to working at that scale or with such fiddly little bits. I don't know how Kris does it. It took me the last couple of hours. I am, however, now the proud owner of 1 cardboard gate.
The textures here are from Wilderness and Caverns Print & Paste again. The floor is a strip of DG Cropland again, on cereal box card this time so that it lays flat on the tiles.
It's 3 and 3/4 inches wide in total with the gate itself 2 inches across. I'm pleased with it!

Thanks Kris. I think with the number of Print & Paste sheets you've put out now, there's scope to make a lot of useful stuff. I'm mainly held back by my lack of skill and confidence! I've made various bits of scatter terrain from your textures before. I look forward to your videos and I'll keep watching. It'll be great to see what you have for us next!
