hmm... they do kinda look related... but not all of these are for immediate use in the law set...
I am just building a library of cowfolk body parts to make set construction easier. ;D

Cool. I am assuming from the sombrero that there will be some Mexican hombres in the mix. I wonder if you are planning for any braves or buckskin suited suited Daniel Boon types. Whatever comes of it, it looks like you are off to a good start.

yeah.. when i first started this i thought a few sets of western figures would be a moderate challenge.... but now that i really think about it there are a TON of possibilities for minis.
aside from the normal good bad and ugly there are:
Natives Mexican banditos Cavalry Town Folk (barkeep, whores, doc, mayor...) Pinkertons Rail workers, Miners, Chinese immigrants...
The west was full of character..

Once you get the initial designs out of the way, making alternate parts is really easy, and fun. JIM

quick preview of the next lawman in the set... the fair weather sheriff. Life is good for this unwed lawman... every morning he makes his way to the diner for his coffee and eggs... he handles the occasional dispute in town during the day... deals with the occasional drunk at night and usually has a hot meal waiting for him from one or another of the town women. They just adore their sheriff and never miss a chance to remind him who all the eligible brides are. Nope, not much happens in this sleepy town and he likes it that way. Well.. not much happened that is... until a dark stranger came to town... Now the dead don't stay that way for long and there are shadow things carrying people off in the night... Life just got a whole lot darker for our fair weather sheriff

UNdead cowboys. Now there is something that you do not see everyday. The second one looks good. The modular designs are coming together nicely.

For me I would want to see more Garters than Gunbelts.... What's the big deal with the garters, LAoW? Isn't that just what the blackjack dealer uses to keep his sleeves pulled back? Have fun! Steve

Lovin these Ghostgirl.
But the deputies left hand doesn't look right, his thumb is coming over the rifle from the wrong direction I think.

I was going to say the same thing - I can't put my finger on it (no pun intended...) but something about that left hand is just "off". I'm sure one of the guys around here could pinpoint it. Otherwise, another good looking addition to your collection!

Otherwise, another good looking addition to your collection! yeah.. the stuff in here is just screen grabs from my desktop to prove that i am actually doing stuff... i should probably make sure i dont have any glaring anatomical problems first though... everything i do is modular... heads, hands, boots, guns.. that hand was from my pistol shooting guy and i had not gotten around to reshaping it for the rifle... its fixed now though I do love the critique though... it is very helpful for when i overlook things so please do not be discouraged from saying something looks off. i'll try to post cleaner things in here in the future.

ps. Makes me wanna start working on the modular Western Terrain buildings I started ages ago. Floyd, buddy, pal.... you have been holding back on Terrain, the pain! Oh how it hurts! Ease our pain, Floyd and release them to the paying public. Mores the point give Whitewash city a run for it's overpriced, undertextured money. Lord Abaddon of Wormwood

Marvelous work!
Are you planning an entire Old West collection? I for one would defiantely pay for such a set. I love Old West games but have no attractive, larger paper mins.
Are ya...huh huh...are ya?

Are ya...huh huh...are ya? KB that is the plan that rattles around in the back of my head... sorry for the lack of updates.. im about have this basic set done and ready for download... I'm just easily distracted by new ideas and a bit of a nitpicker about little details that i keep changing.

I am horribly bad at deciding when to stop messing with a project and call it done... but I think all the experimentation i've been doing will be worth it in the end. I had been making everything in inkscape and then adding texture and extra shading in gimp but that seemed overly complicated. plus, i'm not really sure that texture even shows up on small human sized figures. I decided to cut gimp out of the process and look for a way to do more exact shading in inkscape besides gradient fills. I REALLY love the shadow and highlights that darkmook uses on his work... so i went with something similar that i think i am happy with. still sort of figuring it out... I also realized i need deadlines or i will just keep experimenting forever so i'll post those in my currently working on post. I'll try to keep to them better than Blizzard does theirs. I know that is not saying much.

I agree this is an instance where continuing effort to improve on this has raised the bar on your quality standard. I think you have or are reaching a benchmark in quality that makes it a real standout.
This is by far (IMO) the best shade work on these figures. And you've used it just the right way and in the right places to give volume and imply detail to that figure. The one really exemplifies your character work. And I think it works better than the generalized dark gradient method on your previous figures. You've got an excellent looking cowpoke there. Kudos!
Does the lighter shading hold up when reduced and printed at 28-30mm?
Just my two bits!
~F
I'd like to see the previous cowpokes shadow work redone like this new one.

I like the two tone shading as well. On really shiny materials you can also add a highlight color. The three color combos really look nice at actual figure size. Now you need to tackle mounted figures... JIM
