Been working on my interpretation of the St. Catherine's Oratory lighthouse on the Isle of Wight. | Differences - Mine is a bit taller (40' not counting the roof roof compared to the 35' original). Upper windows are a bit too large in my build, so have reduced them somewhat for the final build. The building for the lighthouse keeper/priest is based off a drawing on a historical plaque at the site, now since only the original 35' tower remains it is pure conjecture. Originally attached to the tower, I admit I lack the skills to intersect walls and roof with an octagon and attached buttresses (Someday!). Tomorrow, I start texture work.

Actually, that isn't the priest's house, it is the actual Oratory, the place of worship on the pilgrimage route. It may have been used as a lightkeeper's house after Henry VIII decommissioned and confiscated Catholic property. You all know me, I have to over-research anything that interests me.

Thanks for the info! I am the poster-child for lack of knowledge on religion, from the blurbs I found with the pictures, I figured it was a combination house/chapel. The house I made is 2 stories, based off a TINY angled picture on a plaque in front of the tower (and the fact there is a second-story door in the tower). Anything else you find out about it, let me know. I like history and archaeology.

I was trying to find the links I found last night, and saw this. A much better image of the plaque than I saw previously. There is an architectural drawing that I found last night and can't locate today. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/st-catherines-down-and-knowles-farm/features/a-colourful-history-behind-st-catherines-oratoryen.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Catherine%27s_Oratorywww.visitisleofwight.co.uk/explore/coast-and-country/isle-of-wight-landmarksAha! EDIT -- Rats. Gif's don't show www.invectis.co.uk/iow/oratory.gifEDIT #2 -- When I did my amateur version of the Gallarus Oratory, I learned that Oratories were chapels along pilgrimage routes where the pilgrims would stop, pray and chant psalms and hymns. When Godeton was sentenced for having church-owned wine from a shipwreck that had been purchased by King Edward, he was charged to build a lighthouse and chantry for the oratory. A chantry is an altar to be used for Mass. Chantry can also be the fee used to support a priest or chapel. He may have had to set up an endowment to support the priest/ lighthouse keeper for the site. The chapel was in use until Henry VIII decommissioned the Catholic sites. The lighthouse was used for many years thereafter. In the 1700's the chapel had already collapsed, but Sir Richard Worsley built the buttresses to help keep the lighthouse standing. In that gif, you can see that two of the buttresses were built using remnants of the chapel's walls. You certainly found an unusual building, sir

This is hitting me a lot like the Gallarus Oratory. I keep finding myself wanting to know more.
It is totally up to you, of course, but I think you should stick with 'My Interpretation of...', or 'Inspired by...'. Don't get caught up in trying to build something exactly as it is or was. You will find yourself tweaking things forever if you try making it a replica. And frankly, I have seen too many ideas of what the oratory looked like, and they all look different. The guy from the 1890's who dug a trench and found the foundation layout is probably closest, but stick to doing something you would want on your own table.
I hope you and your project are doing well

If I went for exact replica, my OCD would kick in and it would take me months to complete. Ran into that issue with the Inn....worked from a floorplan and sparse module notes, and any time I had to deviate from the plan I got unhappy and spent a huge amount of time on workarounds. I am not feeling so great this week, so minimal progress on the textures. Was going to work on it yesterday, but ended up caring for a kitten a family member found in the parking lot where he works. Miles from a house, all alone. Well, as I told the kitten 'You live here now.' sooo...

Oh, the joy of kittens. The only creature known to be able to breach Quantum-Armored Display Cases to get at papercraft.
Good luck, sir

The gods made them cute so you wouldn't kill 'em for what they do! So far, one of my older two likes the kitten, other hisses and growls. So he's sleeping in his crate...due for food in another hour, so I'll run him around the living room a bit so that he eats and passes out again! Did start on textures today. Going to redo the door, looks fine on the screen, but print shows it needs to be larger. And I hate my work lamp, florescent tube makes things look yellowish...but it has a nice 5" magnifying glass in it, sooo...

Oh, the joy of kittens. The only creature known to be able to breach Quantum-Armored Display Cases to get at papercraft. Good luck, sir The kitten is still among the living, no papercraft shredded though he decided to play-fight me and he bites HARD! I finished texturing the Lighthouse...and it is only almost 4am! Just calling it Medieval Lighthouse, but made a few signs. One of the possible signs is 'Oratorium Sancti Brendani' (Oratory of Saint Brenden according to the english-latin translator I used) with a celtic cross. Other sign options are none, blank - add your own logo, and one from AD&D's World of Greyhawk 'Chapel of Fharlanghn, The Dweller on the Horizon'. God of those who travel, explorers, etc.). Fharlanghn seemed kind of appropriate for a lighthouse. 13 pages, and I filled pages a lot more densely this time AND figured out how to change color on fold lines on dark surfaces. Tomorrow, er, later today, when I have better light, assemble and photograph to make the instruction manual. Modded my fire insert so that it can be removed if anyone wants to use one of those fake flickering candle dealies. I am considering using the fire from Fat Dragon's 3D statue of Baal if I ever want real light from it.
