Quick question if I may...
...what do you think looks best - the version with the 1" grid below the grass/weeds OR the version with it above the grass/weeds?
(note that I'll also be supplying a gridless version )

I like the left version, but it needs extra attention. Towards the bottom, especially, there are large areas with no line demarcation. The right side isn't bad for an 'over' type grid, though. Have you considered a merged version? Where the lines are in both versions may be enhanced, but not badly. But where there are voids in the left version, subtle lines from the right will make the grids easier to see without over-powering.
If that makes sense.

The one on the left LOOKS better, but I suspect in game use where a grid is important, the one on the right will WORK better.
To an extent, it also depends on how tall those patches of woody greenery are meant to be. The lack of shadows suggests they may be all pretty low-growing, so perhaps the grid should be going over them like it does in the right-hand image anyway?

I didn't vote because I think Vermin King and wyvern have given more valuable input than my yes/no would have been. I don't have anything of use to add.

I've done something similar before - where I've essentially had one grid (below) at 50% opacity, and then the whole grid on top at 50% opacity - which means it looks darker on the floor and lighter over the top of the weeds (if that makes sense).

Yeah, judging be a few comments elsewhere, it looks as though some folks are thinking the greenery is quite high - when (as you rightly guessed) it's just a floor pattern (any height will be added with scatter terrain).

I'm still not 100% sold on how things look yet (it might need a lot more work) - but this is the overall idea:
(so some kind of boggy marsh type of thing where the 'islands' are glued down - but the 'scatter' isn't)
