Following the posting of this thread on the CWF, which commented on the overall quietude of said CWF since the pandemic, or indeed as was pointed out there, the death of our much missed Shep, I thought I'd post about this here. One of the Discords I'm on is for the new Shadowdark RPG, which had an extremely successful KickStarter earlier this year (the final tallies, after the late pledges closed, were over 16,000 backers and over $1.5 million raised). It's too late to back, or to late pledge for it now (late pledges closed on Sep 22), but you can find out about it on the campaign page still. That's important, because it'll give you a much better idea of what the question refers to, and you can still pick-up the free PDF quickstart rules via the link a short way down the campaign page. Yesterday, someone posted a query about whether there were any pawns (like the Pathfinder sets of 2D plastic pawns) as monsters for Shadowdark, and most especially whether any existed with the very striking black-and-white illustrative look of the RPG's rulebook illustrations. Now, none came to mind for me, but I did write back saying there are a lot of 2D paper minis out there, both paid-for and free, which would be suitable if printed in B&W/greyscale, given that the game uses similar creatures to much of the original D&D rules, and many of the OSR-style games, given Shadowdark is loosely a modern-mechanics version of OD&D/OSR-style games, which actually works and works well! So, the question here becomes are there any paper minis anyone here's come across which would actually work ideally as minis for this game, in this kind of style? And if not, is it something folks on the CWF might consider doing?

I think you are right that converting most mini's to B&W/greyscale would probably do the trick. The illustrations in the material might have more detail than would work at the small scale, but most mini makers have already adjusted for that.

I have a plan to do some "Grimdark Fantasy" minis in the new year. They would be more realistic, gritty, and would work well as B&W.

Maybe consider making one of the PDF layers specifically in this kind of B&W style (since sometimes switching to greyscale from colour loses part of the detail definition)?

I should probably have thought of this and mentioned it sooner too, but it would be interesting to have some scenery in this same style, I think, a more chiaroscuro look than would be possible with a simple greyscale reprinting, to get those sharp contrasts. There are some good B&W floorplans, if not too many (from memory), but I'm less sure about walls and other structures. I'd be thinking here of mostly white with black-line stone and feature edges, on the principle that printing black in solid lumps is a nightmare.

I think the issue is more trying to find items to point others towards who have far less experience of papercrafting than most folks here, and who may struggle with anything more technical than printing a colour PDF in black and white/greyscale as a starting point.
I know some of the old Skirmisher paper minis came with a colour-your-own version in their PDFs, with just the line art, although those are rather limited in numbers and types.
