The Sales Pitch
The adventurers struggle to understand the intricacies of the game they've found themselves a part of. The rules seemed simple from the outset; a familiar game played out with living pieces with a gruesome twist. "Taking" a piece meant taking a life. It eventually became apparent, however, that this was no level playing field either. The mage to whom this dungeon belonged was not just influencing his own pieces, but extending his will to the opposing pieces as well. Though they fought for their lives, at times they were no match for the mage's pieces, and succumbed to the challenge despite being the aggressor. The party started to realize that to win this game, they needed to outsmart the mage and disrupt his control over the pieces before it was too late for everyone involved.
I'd like to thank my son for enduring a railroad of a one-shot to get to the chessboard, and then indulging me in a game of chess. After the chess game was over (I won't say who won) we realized we forgot to take a photo of the game. I guess that means we were having fun. So, we went back and set up the pieces. Despite the somewhat horrific story behind the game, nobody was actually harmed during the battle that ensued.

The chess board tiles were a tile submission, here: cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/11498/obsidian-chess-room
The miniatures are from the King's Court Printable Chess Set by Brave Adventures. Here's an affiliate link for that: www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/322963/brave-adventures-king-s-court-printable-chess-set?affiliate_id=307969
The King's Court Printable Chess Set comes with a printable chess board of its own, so now you have more options! It also comes with all the pieces OFF of the chess piece stands, so you have a bunch of useful medieval minis in a bunch of colors. There's more? It even has a Japanese variant of chess called Shogi, which adds several new pieces to the game and has rules for promoting and re-deploying captured pieces.
Affiliate links don't cost you anything, but they do earn me a little referral bonus if you end up buying something. If you're bothered by the idea of affiliate links, you can just go to DriveThruRPG and search for the stuff. That said, every little bit helps keep us creators going.
