Clip is found on the Object menu. - Use Object > Clip > Set to clip a texture to a shape.
- Use Object > Clip > Reset to separate a clipped object into it's constituent parts.
Here's a nice little technique for applying textures to shapes. I've created a texture 'pattern' in Inkscape for my example, but it can also be used with bitmap textures. You just have to import your bitmap image into Inkscape first. This is a very rough example, but I think it gives you the idea clearly enough. I just wish it kept the outline during the clip, but it's not a major headache. Incidentally, I used a bitmap image of the front of the Elf shield, clipped to a circle, for the Elf Commander (I tried tracing the shield along with the other body parts, but it just wouldn't work...) Would OBJECT to PATTERN and Pattern fill do the same? I like the clip technique though.... it will let me use an exact piece of the texture without messing about so much

Yeah, as far as I can tell, the upshot's pretty much the same, except you can't seem to give an outline to an object clipped in this manner; you have to create a separate object to serve as the outline, as Dave has here. If you do the 'Object to Pattern' and fill, then you can keep the outline properties, just as if you'd filled it with a solid colour or a gradient. The other advantage to OtP is that once you've created the pattern, it's there in the library so you can apply it to whatever different objects you like in future. As you say, though, Jose, this way's probably a little quicker if you only need to use the pattern once, and it allows you to pick a specific area of texture if you want to, so I guess you don't pays yer money, but you takes yer choice.
