I'm suffering a bit of withdrawal from designing exterior-only medieval buildings. I enjoy being able to finish these in just two or three days, and I've been dying to try out some new textures.
So one of the projects I'll be working on this weekend is a fantasy/medieval model I'm calling the Blackbird Tavern. It'll have Tudor half-timbered beam-and-plaster stylings (and of course lots of optional wall textures), and that classical Tudor overhang.
Since my last outside-textured-only model, I've added a lot of accessories to my collection of bits, creating a slew of new textures, taken lots of photos of weathered wood and other great-looking objects, refined my layering techniques, created full ground tiles and generally improved everything about the way I create models. This will be a great chance to return to designing a simple, easy terrain piece and apply all of the new stuff I've learned by working on interior-plus-exterior ruins for the last few months.

Here's the paper test for this model:

Any chance of some really heavy weathering/burning on a layer and maybe a really smashed up roof, I love the model and that would let it fit into our ruined city (a not quite so ruined Inn). The narrow 'yard' is a great touch, turns it into a real stand alone piece, at home in a town or as a wayside tavern.

I love the side yard. It provides excellent terrain obstacles for interesting game play.

Very sadly, this project is canceled as a result of hard drive failure. I was nearly done with it, too. Very, very sad.

Damn technology How about a wizard's tower? With lots of dormers and balconies?

I'll miss this one...actually, I'll be the first to come right out & say that I hope it returns down the road. The fenced yard & small outbuilding is something I haven't seen elsewhere, and is something I think is worth visiting later. This set actually reminds me of houses near where I live. My condolences on the drive's death, and good luck with the WW ruins. Maybe you should put a "memorial busted porta-comp" in your next futuristic ruin. - Pb

It was tough to see this one go. It was a big project and I'd put in a lot of time on it. It's going to take me a little while to get over it and start over.
I think the next time I tackle something like this, I'll try to include playable interiors. That'll make it an even bigger project than the original, but I'd really like to challenge myself with something like that.

How about a wizard's tower? With lots of dormers and balconies? Hmmm... I'm not sure what my next project will be, but that might be it! I'll put pencil to paper today and see what kind of towers I can come up with.
