I've been taking some of the figures on this site and making a few edits/additions to work in my current DnD 4E game, but I'm having a problem when copying from the PDF's.
To give an example, I need some Kobolds that aren't yet covered here. A dragonshield, a chieftan, and a vermin handler. To start, I opened up the Kobold Warband PDF, set the display to "actual size" and did a screenshot. Then I pasted the results into Paint.Net and start editing. When I'm done, I print to PDF using CutePDF Writer.
This method keeps the sizes all correct when printing, but my results are rather fuzzy when compared to the originals. When printed and cut out, it's actually not a big enough difference for my players to care, but it bothers me. These custom figures are just for my group, but if I did share them on the forum, I'd be embarassed at their quality on the screen.
I think the problem comes during the "screen shot" part, hence my question. How do you take a PDF and get the images into your favorite image editing program? I've tried a few different methods, but haven't really come across anything that works well.
Thanks for your help!!

Yup, the screenshot is your bogeyman. Most of the figures that come through here are done at a 300dpi resolution, I suspect most screenshot programs use 100 dpi resolution or less, hence the fuzziness. Many paint programs will open pdf's; right click on one and see if you have any 'open with' options, then choose your paint program. Do your paint programs have any import options? Have you tried downloading and installing The GIMP? It's a free Photoshop-like program that will allow you to import and edit pfdf's. Good luck!

I like the gimp for doing this sort of thing, it works well. You will find other good things said about the gimp in other places on this forum. you also get to choose the dots per inch that you want to use.

Cool, thanks for the replies! I haven't used GIMP in a long time, but I guess I'll give it a shot. Paint.NET doesn't seem to like PDF's, so I'll have to switch.
It's a shame, I have really started to like Paint.NET...
Thanks!!

Use GIMP to convert the pdf to a graphical format that Paint.net likes and go from there.
