I'm doing some tests of rowboat designs. I've had these on my mind for a while, and I've been wanting to try out some curved surfaces. Something small like this is just what I need to get started.
I'll have some photos soon. I can't wait to show you Akbar crossing the Delaware.

sounds like a neat idea,I can't wait to see the progress. If they work out any chance of something larger like say a Viking longboat?

I'm going to create three or four variations for now.
I've finished the line-work and paper test of the first rowboat and I'm happy with it. But I want to make another rowboat that's a little thinner. These are two-person rowboats (at most).
Once that's done, I'm going to try some longer (three-person) rowboats (one fat boat, one skinny boat).
I'd also like to put together a mast and a sail, but I'm worried about the whole assembly being too flimsy, and where are the miniatures going to stand? Hopefully I'll figure something out.

Hi, Dave. I'm looking forward to what you come up with. Here's an image of a Faering, a medieval clinker built boat that was essentially a smaller version of the viking longship. This could be a good starting point to experiment with. If successful, it could be scaled up to produce a longship.

Here's my paper test for a rowboat (and some crates). I'm starting simple, and wargame-friendly, as you can see. There's room for two minis to stand in it, or one mini and some crates. They all fit on one page, which is nifty. As usual I'm going to include lots of different skin layers. You'll get several different woods, maybe some decorative trim. I'll provide some boat names painted on the back, or on the bow. I might leave some coils of rope and oars lying around. And there will be barnacles. I think I'll call it the Smuggler's Rowboat and sell it for a buck. Looking ahead, I could make something like a faering by mirroring the front part of this rowboat.

Looking very nice Dave, thought about maybe adding a little mast and sail as an option?

Nice boat.
How about adding a sitting model or two, like e.g. a rower with oars?

thought about maybe adding a little mast and sail as an option? Thought about it, but ultimately this boat's just too small. On a slightly bigger boat I might add sails, though. How about adding a sitting model or two, like e.g. a rower with oars? Not my style. I like paper figures, but I'm not very good at designing them.

You need at least one pirate chest.

I got boats in the works right now, but they are not as far advanced as your designs yes, and they'll hopefully suffice to cover different aspects of customer's needs . That being said, I like the texturing and the ornaments on your design.

I'm still amazed by how good David does his wood grains. Those pictures don't really show all the detail when they are printed out.

I managed to create a mast and sail for this. I don't know where the mini's supposed to stand, but that's not my problem.

I'm sure they will look just fine with a few Imperfect Sailors or Fishermen manning them. Dryw the Harper

Paper miniatures would have no trouble manning this boat with the sale fitted. Normal minis will have a tight squeeze. Akbar barely makes it, and he has to lean a little bit. The sails are turning out pretty nice. You're not going to believe all the different textures variations you can put together. Could be one of my most detailed models evererer. I just got in a fresh bottle of Aleene's Tacky Glue and I'm excited to try it out. I'm going to do one last paper test (a rowboat with a sail of course) and hopefully everything will look okay. Then I can start making the PDF or two.

This could turn out to be something down right cool! I like the looks of it so far. Just don't forget about your stackable buildings.

Of course now you are going to need to create waterways for your ground tiles collection (or at least a shoreline with possible docks) or there will be nowhere for your boats to sail. Dryw the Harper

Fantastic! Downloading as we speak. I'd love to see you bring your considerable talents to bear on a viking style long-ship.

I'm seriously considering something like that, afet. Don't know how soon it'll happen, but it's on my list.
