Steve any chance of some pics of your steampunked version when it's done? I put one together last night, hope Dave doesn't mind build shots in his release thread but here it is: I magnetized the mast and front sail join to the bow so I can lift it of for storage. Nice little boat I'm looking forward to the next one .

I was waffling on buying it, as I was not sure how to store it. I already have a mod for it. A chase gun on the front and four swivel guns on the sides! Throw in a Jolly Rogers on top and Captain jack at the wheel.

Beautiful build, Sirrob. It looks fantastic with the mini! I can't wait to print and build mine.

I picked mine up today! Nice model!
*EDIT*
Ugh, I built it poorly, it is slightly bowed so the model does not sit flat.

Does anyone have any advice about this? Are you printing on 110Lb paper (about 200gsm)? Also chipboard is useful for gluing to the bottoms and the inside of models.

Does anyone have any advice about this? i have this model but haven't attempted the build yet. However, other ships with curved sides like this seem to really benefit from a foamcore base. though the exact shape can be a bit tricky if you want to hide the foamcore inside of the model. I plan to do a foamcore base for this model as well, but with my current schedule that is a ways off.

I have built other ship models with a foamcore base, it does help.
But I'll have to think about how to incorporate a foamcore base to this model. If you just put it on the bottom, it's REALLY obvious since the model isn't that large to begin with. Which means it would have to go on the inside, and then the deck wouldn't fit right. It would require lots of fussing and trimming I think.

Also chipboard is useful for gluing to the bottoms and the inside of models. Yup, I'm using 110lb cardstock. I think the problem is that I'm being to picky about having a nice tight joint at the bow and where the bow meets the deck. I'll have to build it a couple more times and experiment with leaving a slight gap to allow the deck to lie flatter.

My first attempt bowed up as well. I've got a second one printed and I see if I can glue it bowing down slightly so that it dries up straight. We'll see.

Another problem I've been having is related to multi-layer PDF's and Foxit Reader. For some reason, when I try to print from Foxit Reader, it prints every layer instead of just the ones I have turned on.
Has anyone else come across this problem?
I tried Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader, and these work fine. But I'd rather use Foxit Reader if I have the choice.

It's gonna bow no matter what you do to it. My attempts to give it a completely flat bottom kept doing very strange things to the back end, and if I made small adjustments there it would throw off the front end. After lots of trial and error I decided a little bit of bowing was preferable to what I was having to do to make it not bow. I'm trying a different approach for my next boat to avoid that, but for this one I figured some Genuine Wave Rocking Action wouldn't hurt.
If it really bothers you, let me know.

hehe, that's kind of funny. No, it doesn't bother me much, now that I know that's the way it's supposed to be I was thinking it was supposed to be flat and I was assembling it out of spec.

My attempts to give it a completely flat bottom kept doing very strange things to the back end, and if I made small adjustments there it would throw off the front end. I believe that the problem is that the hull side pieces are straight. Geometrically, the only way to prevent the bowing is to have the bottom of the hull side pieces curve downward at the prow (see the attached image). If the hull side pieces are straight, it will inevitably pull upwards at the prow. Attachments:
