I started a new project today. Sometimes an idea sits in my head for months before I do anything about it. This is one of those. I'll post some images once there's something to see. Maybe you can guess what it's going to be.

Work progresses on Project X. What I can tell you is that it features a set of stairs, a balcony, and a thing that is curved.

So, is it a cathedral or a mage tower?

Probably not what you were expecting, but here's the paper test for this mystery project: This is the third of my gate models -- this time it's the imposing East Gate. It has a little bit of everything, with a balcony, a buttress, wall dormers, stairs, rooftop deck. And the archway is a nice change from all the square-edged stuff I usually do. I'm glad to have the geometry finished on this model, but I know skinning is going to be a big job. I may stay in this mode and try to get a nice working model of the River Trader together, before I start applying any color to anything.

After you get the River Trader done, you'll have to do a Water Gate!
Have fun! Steve

I wouldn't, too many people stumbled over their watergates in the past... uhm... . It looks nice. Is that an outhouse on the right side in the upper pic? And if so, does it create an aoe of acid splash inside or ourside the city walls?

Here's the result of my second paper test. I had a little bit of room left on my pages, so I added some flags and banners and a flagpole at the last minute. There's still a little strip of space for a couple more extras, so right now I'm working on adding a hanging sign if you want to use this as a funky shop or inn.

I was able to squeeze a hanging sign into the empty space. I've used up just about every corner of each page, and even had to stretch one to 7.7" wide. (It's okay. Your printer can take it.)
I think it's safe to say that the line-work on this model is done. I'm going to back it up at this point, just in case.

Quick technique question: I noticed a blue grid on your test builds. Is this to help in alignment or does it have another purpose?

The current state of this model is much as you see it in the picture above. The geometry is complete, and it just needs to be skinned. It's actually nice to have a couple of models at that stage, since I can pick them up whenever I'm in the mood to finish them off, and it's like half of the work is already done. I just haven't been in the mood to finish this model yet, so that's where it is. But it's nice to have it in my back pocket. I think when things quiet down around here and I can plan on having a week of uninterrupted texturing, I'll get back to work on this. I noticed a blue grid on your test builds. Is this to help in alignment or does it have another purpose? The blue Battleship grids help with positioning the textures. It's so I know exactly where to put doors and other stuff in relation to the glued-on components.

Question: what if i don't build the "tiny" wood pieces that support the terrace? So basically building the big shapes... are they textured or i will see the white spots where the supports should have been glued? (this question is related to the other models also)

So basically building the big shapes... are they textured or i will see the white spots where the supports should have been glued? (this question is related to the other models also) You'd see white spaces if you left those off the model. Almost all of my models are like that. I do that because I've found that glue works better if it's paper-to-paper without any ink or toner in the way. Congratulations on getting this one finished and published. Looks mighty fine! Thanks! I really dig your stuff, too!

Great model!
I would also love to get that one in a multi layered version (which you mentioned in a posting that seems to have vanished).
