I'm almost done with the Orcs that I've been working on, and I have concept sketches ready for the next race. Now I've been thinking about terrain for them.
I have a good idea about how I'd like the trees to look and work, and buildings should be pretty easy as well. But I'm kinda stuck on hills.
I just cant seem to figure out the angles needed to make them.
Any ideas or thoughts?
Thanks Ken

Do you think you would be happy with canyon walls with flat plateaus on top. You could do something similar to Wold Works Mars terrain, just with different earth colors.

The best hills I've ever seen are Tirik's, but I haven't tried to build them. Go to his projects page and look at the pics.

I've looked at those a few times. They seem really blocky to me.
I was thinking along the lines of a set of four hills that could be laid out as one giant hill, two smaller half hills or four corner hills. The interior sides would be flat with rocky texturing for cliff sides, and the rest would be sloped and grass/battle field texture.
I was thinking each hill top would be almost a full page and the sides would be on another. I imagine that I would also need some support under them to keep them stiff.

Ebbles Miniatures had what I think you are looking for available in his 2009 line of models; That's no longer available as a separate product but is available as part of his clearance mega-bundle dvd for $50usd. The next closest thing would be ArmorGrid's hill terrain.

What you could do is make a white paper test model. Just cut a piece of paper out and tape it together in the shape you want. Once you have something you like, remove the tape and use a flat bed scanner to put it into your computer and you can texture the image. If you don't have a scanner, then unfold it and use a ruler and protractor to make measurements of it.

Feel free to approximate the shape of our Armor Grid hill pieces. I've found that if you just have a concave hill corner and a convex hill corner you can make several different shapes by combining them... round, bean shaped, ridges, valleys, mountains, etc... If you add in a square piece with three vertical edges and a square piece with four vertical edges you can just about make anything you want. Very much like the Ebble's approach, but that set is missing the concave corners and textures for the "cliff" faces.

Squirmydad - Those are very close to what I had in mind, unfortunatly I don't have the funds to buy his set just for hills, I wish I did as I'm sure there are alot of things in there that I could find inspiration from.
Tommygun - I think thats probably what I'll end up doing. I guess I was hoping some one might have a more effecient solution.
Dagger - Thanks for the offer, I may just do that.
