I'm a big fan of Battlefleet Gothic, but it does not lend itself well to custom ships and fleets.
I've been itching to make some Starship paper models, but figure the only way I'll see it through is if I'm playing a Starship combat game while to motivate me.
Both Warcosm and Starmada are relatively inexpensive on RPGNow and seem pretty well received, but I can't find anyone who actually plays them to bounce a few questions off of.
Warcosm even has a ship building Application that figures out the point values and creates game sheets for your custom fleets, but seems pretty rules light.
If you've played either game, please share your thoughts on them.

Starmada: AE was my biggest failure in bringing new games to my group. They are still kidding me for having bought, print and binded that crap. Now: it is not that the game does not works.... it depends if you like to roll dice for 15 minutes to resolve ONE attack. This: boardgamegeek.com/article/5053356#5053356is a good thread about starship games. The link points to my post explaining why me and my friends will all hate that game. But reading thru the whole topic you'll see ppl liking it.... so it's really a matter of tastes.
