I'm planning to run some games of 5150 Star Army and possibly other systems using David Okum's great Retro Space minis, so I decided to try my hand at creating some retro-looking combat vehicles. Here's my first attempt, a retro-looking hover tank. It is 2" wide by 3" long. I print the Retro Space minis at about 2/3 of the original size to use them as (slightly larger) 15mm minis. I know that some people play with vehicles a little smaller than they should so as to not take so much table space. In that case, it should fit with 28mm minis.

And here is the model file. It was created in Inkscape (the "bolts" are just a thick dotted line )

That's awesome. Those invaders just scream for vehicles, don't they? I'd love to see some in play pics. I love the fins and the vibe really reminds me of that old videogame Battlezone.

I loved battlezone. Oh, for green wire-frame videogames again

I unoffically dub this the "THUNDERBIRD" tank. I call it this for 2 reasons... 1) It looks like a 1957 Thunderbird, and 2) it looks like something that the "THUNDERBIRDS" would pilot.
That is a true compliment, and I really like this retro vehicle.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the comments! okumarts: the invaders really scream for vehicles kiladecus: thanks! I tried to draw some lines from 50s/60s cars and it seems it worked. After some time looking at that model, I think I'll repurpose it for the space patrol (and make a variant for the imperiax) and try to build some kind of mini flying saucer for the invaders. Here's a quick sketch.

I've been working slowly on this: Been working on figuring out how to fold the dome up out of clear acetate so I can have a martian driver .

Wow! A transparent dome. Wonderful.
So you must do interiors. ;D
Perhaps David, for Christmas sure, gives us pilots and crew. ;D

Been working on figuring out how to fold the dome up out of clear acetate so I can have a martian driver . I guess that, to achieve some sort of symmetry, you should make that (as example) "even slices" goes under "odd slices", which should be larger than the former to overlap them.... Building a "transparent paper" cupola could be a pain, imho... and the overlaps will be noticeable.... why not a transparent ring (a cylinder) and an opaque cupola instead?

I can even see alternating rings: bottom transparent, next up opaque, next transparent, next two opaque and an opaque top cap (if I'm counting rings correctly)
The two transparent rings will have tabs that glue under the opaque rings thereby hiding them.
Or I could be totally off my gourd...

Here's my first test build of the mini saucer, where it became apparent that I got my measurements completely wrong on the cupola. Still, I'm happy with the rest of the model... although I'm tempted to switch to a cylindrical cupola like the one on Okumart's link.

Or Domed Flyers could be Command Vehicles and Cylindrical Top Flyers could be the Attack Vehicles ...
I always cheat on domes and either resize part of a blank globe or resize a dome from something else ...

Looking Good Gilius and quick designing . You could borrow one of these geodesic shapes: www.korthalsaltes.com/I've been messing with the snubcube, but I'd like to try out a Snub Dodecahedron and/or a Hectohexecontadihedron (all halves) Goodluck

Thanks Sirrob! The quick design was a result of having some free time due to the holiday in the middle of the week... now, I guess I'll only have some time again by the end of the next week :\

WOW! That is an AWESOME site Sir Rob! Holy cow! Perfect for people just getting into model design!
Gilius, I know that 2D fold-over weapons are great, but don't forget that 3D weapons are simply rectangular boxes or tubes! That could be just the ticket to knock this model out of the park! Looks really good!
