I need a little advice.
I am getting my paper miniatures game ready for release and I'd like to make the figures ready for a cutter, but I don't actually have a cutter.
I'm not trying to make the cut files, but I would like to have the PDFs with the miniatures cut-ready, so if(when) I get a cutter, or work out a deal to get cut-files made I don't have to go back and retrofit all the PDFs.
Is this just a matter of including registration marks or is their something else that needs to be done? Can I just get a blank sheet with the registration marks (and does someone have on that they would share with me) and build my PDFs on that?

There is some debate about this at the moment with a new format of cutter registration marks.
Here's the one thing that would help most - just fit your images into the center 7" x 10" - then people can add their own registration marks after they may cutfiles.

From what I've seen & heard, the registration marks for the two machines are not compatible. Silhouette claims it's a firmware issue, but the new machine is more accurate. Probably the simplest way to prep your figures would be to download the Studio software: www.silhouetteamerica.com/software.aspx It's free, and easy to use. With that, you have more options. I've "printed" a blank page with the registration marks to a PDF printer & then imported it into GIMP as a base layer. Since you'll have the original graphic files, it would probably be easier to just merge the graphics in Studio directly & then print it to your preferred PDF printer. Do that with each version of the registration marks & you're done. I think the simplest way to make your PDFs compatible with both machines is to have each version of the registration marks on separate layers. Studio will look for the appropriate version of the registration marks, so you will be able to get away with just the one cut file, at least. - Pb

Sammo, I can upload you a xcf/psd file with cameo and Sd rego marks if it would help.
The best solution (as mentioned above) I have at this point is either layered PDF options for cameo and SD (expensive as you need indesign or full acrobat). The bug fix to let scribus do this still hasn't been coded, so my guess is still 12 months until we can use scribus for laying out pdf's, heres the bug/feature we need as Jabbro lodged it (http://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=8490). Maybe add a comment there that your interested in the feature as well to add some extra weight to the request.
or
My current hack workaround will be to create my gimp file with both layers as an option at the bottom and generate 1 pdf with cameo marks and one with SD marks, of course hard on the user for download as basically every release is x2 the size...

Seeing how I primarily use free software (I’ve been making my PDFs with Primo) I will not be able to use the layer making option.
An xcf file with the registration marks would be very helpful if you have one available.
Though I am not too excited by the idea of having 2 different PDFs, especially if I am not offering cut-files just yet. Still I’ll want to include them as layers in whichever xcf files I build so I can turn them on and off and make various PDfs, even if that doesn’t happen until later.
It surprises me that the registration marks change between models of cutter. It seems like the manufacturer would want to keep as much backward compatibility as possible.

Yes it's very annoying that they changed the format. Likewise I use free software. To do layered PDF's I have to go see a friend in the "business" with my files so I try not to abuse him to much . The other option is to just release a studio file with the graphics inside anyone with a cutter can print straight from the studio software those without can just use the PDF. Really hoping Scribus gets enhanced soon... Attachments:
