The theme for this months HOARD is Fantasy NPC, Races and CharactersThis can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category.

What are some of the things that count as NPCs? The obvious I can think of are merchants, black smiths and inn keeper/bar people, but what else? Just looking for ideas.

I think pretty much anything can be an NPC; monster wielding or holding something special down to a halfling begger. It's a pretty broad category this month

I think I may get in on this one. I just got involved in a new Pathfinder campaign and our group needs paper minis for our characters. So far we have a female gnome druid, a female dwarf barbarian, a male human fighter, and a male half-orc cleric. I have had trouble finding any good figs for a half orc cleric. So I'll just have to make one!

Oh, I was planning on doing some undead things, but I guess that would qualify as "Monsters or Creatures..." So, I will punt, I guess. Afterall, there is a FINE line between NPC's and PC's... (well not so much a "line", per se, but an "N" for sure). Ok... Maybe I will start with a Halfling Barber, Demi-Demon Blacksmith, or a Human Scout...

Kiladecus some largish special looking undead creatures would make for some very nice NPC's, could be boss like characters, Hero equivalents or just large special Nasties/Henchmen/Unit leaders.
Sure would add some diversity to an undead army or provide variety for a RPG adventure.

Well, I guess that is enough of a "go-ahead" to finish my Skeletal Lizard men that OneMonkeyBeau was asking for...
Ok. I have just 3 1/2 short weeks to make up a "Squad" of them...
Was thinking a sword, pole-arm, axe and possibly a short bow... any thoughts? (POST THEM ON MY BOARD as not to highjack THIS post, please)...

I would think that an NPC would usually be a relatively intelligent character/creature that communicates with the PCs. An NPC has a narrative function as apposed to just a combat function.
They are usually humanoid, but a dragon could be an NPC by the above standards. A skeletal lizard man would qualify as long as he looks like he could communicate with the PCs rather than just try to eat them.
If people are looking for requests, here are a few: -Halfling monk -Goliath ranger -Shardmind psion
Cheers,

Hey, I can do one of those (the last one) ... possibly! (Great, ANOTHER distraction)! Or at least, I can ATTEMPT it. Hey, I would like to see someone do something like the "Bashers" from Sanity Studios, only in a lava/coal-ember version. PLEASE.... ;D Anyone. Ok... MUST get to bed... I am exhausted, and now visions of shard mindflayers are encircling my head...

Since you are looking for ideas, here’s a few I have but not necessarily a need for, A judge and lawyers, all wigs and briefs, that’s documents and files not ladies panties! Tax collector and guards, Refuse collectors, Physician, wet nurse with a baby attached to breast, horse trader, cowman, shepherd with sheep, rat catcher, school teacher, accountant with big books and abacus, mayor and aldermen, gypsies, tinker with mule, soothe sayer, wise woman, boy up a tree, boy with pea shooter/catapult, girl looking down well, wood chopper, man with ladder. I’m sure everyone has had an ill feeling towards one or more of these at some time.

Ok... Just to make sure we are on the same page... What is a "Cowman?" First thing that comes to mind in a Minotaur... or a cowboy... or a Cowboy Minotaur... (Ok, I am sure that last one was just me). Come to think of it, a big Bison wearing chaps and a hat does sound cool to me... BOT: Those are some very good, and VERY precise figure suggestions, Al. I am thinking that there should be a preacher, store clerk, and constable. Now, back to that Bison Cowboy....

I was thinking of a guy / woman etc that looked after cattle, str aw hat, corn stalk in the mouth, big stick over his shoulder and wearing a smocked shirt, some one did a man's head on a cows body a while back. Have fun even if its just the ideas thing, Buffalo Bill half man, half Bison why not, he could fit in well with a cowboy game

Yeah... when the theme is "Fantasy" a "western" figure will not fit in. I may have to save that for the hoard later on in the year. (Added this to my "To-Do" list).
I may have to "cheat" a little and make him a blacksmith with leather apron, instead of leather chaps.
Who knows.... I have eaten up WAY to much of this thread with my incessent ramblings.... SORRY!

@reivaj: those are definitively cool bugs, I'm looking forward to seeing them finished.
I had the best intentions to try my hand at something hoard-worthy this time, but time constraints, other projects and the lack of a proper workplace (which is about to be fixed) got in the way...

First ones done and coloured, no border yet and I'll stick him on a 30mm tab when complete, currently he's on a 25mm tab: Not to happy with the cape, but I know what to do a little differently next time .

finished them both off, played around with the cape a little on the peasant hero and adjusted his pants colour. Wife pointed out that he looked like a half naked ken doll... I'll finish them up tommorrow and then start the layout of Decs hoard and Jans hoard.

Eheh, yeah! These guys have a light source just below the ..uhm... crotch. I'd change that gradient direction, and maybe i'd choose a color for the pants more "far" from the skin tone.
Other than that, they are wonderful. edit: uh, and i'd tune down the red in that tiny spot between the shield and the body. It should be well shadowed, after all.
