The theme for this months HOARD is Greek and Roman Era Ancients
This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme.
If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome.
No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged.
If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category.

"There is wisdom in turning as often as possible from the familiar to the unfamiliar: it keeps the mind nimble, it kills prejudice, and it fosters humour." George Santayana, philosopher (1863-1952)
For all those Runequest/Argonauts/300-fans out there and dedicated to all those MMA Machines on two legs a long time ago I made this Bronze Age Hero ... . Everything strictly ahistorical and digitally painted.

;D Thank you, @reivaj. Yes, come on ... follow me! Ancients are great fun (I like Bronze ...). As you can see, the time limits for Monthly Hoard are very flexible right now!
Ancients are the perfect legitimation for bare-and-heavy-breasted Cretan Priestesses or Insane Female Nude Bacchants tearing a poor shepherd apart. Both would be historical. I decided to paint an ahistorical bare-and-heavy-muscled Male Fantasy Warrior (oiled).
@cowboy - if not here there will be always a place and a heart for your Ballista ... finish it!
Funny, I have to look up those Getty Shield Designs ... . I was not referencing any historical material while painting - I even didn't know what to paint on the shield - a dragonhead - an ant - a demon? Demon! So I tried to resemble a pseudo-greek theatre mask look. I wanted to give the bronze parts an archaic, preclassical look with rich ornaments and runic inscriptions (that's the Aztec influence). I really had some Runequest mood while painting. So you cannot take this too seriously for 'authentic' Ancient Greek armor. Weaponry is '300'(film)-like, helmet is more or less classical, shield design Pseudo-Homerian. The shield is bronze-plated, which would be very heavy, but I think there is some evidence for such shields around 1200 BC.
So, you are interested in a multicolor-faction set, @glenn? I could change the cloak color most easily - the shield design is a different thing - those bronze effects are eating a lot time. But if you are interested in more authentic shield designs I could research some pottery sources. As I imagine, the wooden or leathery shields of classical greece were more or less painted with colors ... . Lots of mythological creatures and animals ... . In greek style.

Medusa heads were really popular (judging from the Getty's collection). For some reason, their tongues are depicted hanging like a St Bearnard's. Wasn't sure which would be worse, the snakes or the drool.
I have just learned, that Hoplite shields of the later, classical era were also bronze plated. About 8 kg. Uff! But seems to be, they were painted very colorful for at least parts of their (shiny) surface.
I have found lots of ready-made Greek shield patterns for 1/72 scale on the Net. Some very simple and abstract (spirals), some defining (letters!), some tribal-totemistic (mythological/animal).
So, what do you need?
I suddenly imagine to stamp shield patterns with Gimp on a simple, shiny bronze shield. Would be nearly historical and look cool.
Maybe I could make a full set out of this, if interest is high enough. Maybe this could earn me an own thread, too?

I'm playing De Guiche ("evil" count) in a new english verse translation of "Cyrano de Bergerac". A really talented cast, I'm feeling it a bit daunting, I've been mostly directing for the last few years except for performing roles I learned years ago and all for kids. I'm also doing the sword fight choreograhpy and that is going really well.
Thanks for asking
Sorry to hijack the thread.
On the other hand, maybe it's the herd that is crazy.
Rostand. Oh, what a sad play. Lots of male deaths. But romance all over the place. I have a deep respect for theatre and acting - as my own brain is like a ragged pocket - everything is falling through. Without my notebooks, tables and plans - I am blind and helpless. Standing on the podium and forgetting my lines in front of 500 people - that's belonging to my worst nightmares. And body language (acting) is not my strength either, for sure. So, @cowboy - I bow to you - and be careful with the theatre blades ... .
Your minis are very good, you really achieved a new level since your first minis!
The logo is a too much polluted. Too many elements. It isn't 'comfortable' to the eyes. Some tips: Use only one font. You can vary size and thickness but write everything in just one font. Try to find a good color combination of two to four colors, and work with them, dont throw every color of the palette at once.
EDIT: ------ Just noticed 2 minor errors (visible on PDF after enlarging): -helmet and hair shadows somehow disappeared (coat) -snake color layer is shifted (accessories - hoplon #1) Nothing crucial but it should be corrected anyway
Thanks guys . About the logo: it´s the first try. I don´t know what to do with the right text, if i take it more to the right there is too much distance between the initial letter and the rest of the text. I´d try to take out the right part of the amulete but it look asymmetric. I hear proposals about it . I´ll try to use the same font in the "minis" word, but the other letter in "reivaj" word are not a font, they are objects in vector. Great Work Mesper, i love your work. Thanks for participate in the hoard

On the logo: can you move the R over to the rest of the text and maybe make the interior of the amulet something artsy like a glowing jewel? As it stands, it's hard to put your company name together. (Logos don't have to have the company name--mine doesn't, Coke's doesn't)
That said, when we're down to critiquing the logo design, that's a pretty good indication that the figures are great.
Vermin King: Well, today is my first papercrafting workshop at one of the Senior Primary Care clinics. Wish me luck
